My Arwen Doll
Having successfully completed my Arwen dress (which you can see here) I wanted to make another. But, realistically, I knew that I would probably seldom wear the one I already made. I wasn't sure I wanted to sink all the time and money into another, probably more expensive, difficult gown.
Then I remembered the Arwen doll that was then on sale at my local KB Toys. It was wearing the purple Rivendell Farewell dress, which I confess I hate. But I could change that, couldn't I?
I had never made a dress for a doll before, so I knew (and know) none of the tricks that doubtless would have saved me some time. Instead, using the extensive notes on the dress from AlleyCatScratch.com, I drafted a pattern as if it were for me.
The dress is constructed, as with the real one, in two layers. The underdress, to which the sleeves are attached, was sewn on to doll. The overlayer, made of stretchy velvet cannibalised from a skirt on the clearance rack, pulled over her head. The hardest part was making the upper sleeves. They were to be fitted, but had to pull over the doll's very large hands, which I couldn't remove. The skirt is very long, as the photo below shows. Since the doll can't walk (her legs are held together with a rubber band, actually) she is in no danger of tripping.
Overall, I am very pleased with how this project turned out.
