Ford of Tyber River - East Bank
This is a beautiful, quiet spot in among the sylvan forest. The river gurgles
merrily just to your west, the water nearly clear and fairly shallow at this
point though the river is reasonably broad. You probably have a good chance of
being able to wade your way across it. The binary suns are both at mid ascension
on opposite sides of the sky, providing brilliant illumination, and steady
warmth despite the shade of the massive trees above you. There is a small game
trail leading off to the east.

Kaa'raha nods to Windshadow as he lands, looking him over, before glancing back to MoonFrost, who had been looking at her earlier.
MoonFrost peers back at Kaa'raha again, not knowing who the gryphoness is yet. As Windshadow lands, she calls out to him, feathers once again ruffling around the eggs.
Windshadow touches down quietly and shakes himself out, still twinging with healing aches from his injuries. He nods in return to Kaa'raha and heads directly for MoonFrost, churrping a soft wordless greeting to his mate and nuzzling first her, then each egg in turn.
Surukk sticks out, as a Windhaven, big even for one of them. He's a big-ass Samoan of a gryphon.
MoonFrost takes her time nuzzling Windshadow, glad to see him in one piece still. Worried for both mate and eggs, her face holds a slight pinched look to it. Too much has happened lately for this gryphoness to take in at once.
Kaa'raha averts her eyes, letting the two gryphons have their privacy. At least, as much privacy as this crowded eastern bank can have.
Surukk reclips his packs to his harness, one after another, and slowly, ponderously lifts himself up, to advance upon Aubri.
Aubri sighs loudly from near Moonfrost as Surukk approaches, shrugging at her and giving a quick nuzzle.
Windshadow settles in beside MoonFrost, against their eggs. His dark amber gaze tracks Surukk's ponderous approach of Aubri curiously.
Surukk says, "Aubri! Aubri. I'm coming for you."
Aubri flicks his wing, "I noticed, I noticed. What NOW?"
Kaa'raha sits back down on her rump, flicking her stub of a tail. She is close enough to the other gryphons to be able to observe them.
Surukk says, "Checking your stitches, Aubri, now be quiet or I'll give you a rectal probe."
MoonFrost glances towards Surukk, then back to the other males around her. She takes comfort in their nearness.
Kaa'raha stops the motion of her tail and arches an eyeridge.
Windshadow gives Surukk a sidelong stare and nuzzles MoonFrost again. A rectal probe is one threat he'd take with utter seriousness from the Windhavener.
Aubri hisses and lifts his wing, baring the long wrapping of bandages with a glance at Moonfrost.
Surukk grunts. "Good. Have you been careful, Aubri, like I told you? No flying, not even any high jumping." He nudges feathers aside and inspects the stitched wound with a magelight.
Aubri clenches his beak on an angry retort, "Yes, of course, you won't let me forget!"
MoonFrost raises an eyeridge at Aubri, "Just pacing too much if you ask me..."
Surukk pulls more bodyfeathers aside and takes special care with Aubri. "I agree, Moonfrost. But he has a lot of energy to work off, and these stitches and what's under them should itch. You nearly lost your life, there, Aubri, but it can still infect if you open it up again."
Aubri rumbles, "Yes, mother," and rolls his eyes again.
Surukk grunts, satisfied by what he sees. "You're healing quickly, Aubri. You're strong," he praises.
MoonFrost chuckles softly, shaking her head for a moment.
Windshadow murmurs to MoonFrost in a basso undertone, "Thank goodness I wasn't injured more severely," as he eyes Surukk. Then he nuzzles MoonFrost more firmly along the beak and throat and says with strong emotion, "And thank goodness you weren't hurt at all..."
Aubri bobs his head. "Good. I'm going to be walking a bit, soon, I expect..
MoonFrost turns back to Windshadow, and returns his nuzzle, "Everyone watched out for me... and the eggs. " Grateful eyes turn back to Aubri and the others.
Surukk grunts and nods to Aubri. "I know you'd rather be out there searching for Dove, but you're doing the right thing being here helping the others. She's alive, I can feel it."
MoonFrost glances back, "Dove's missing?? I... I didn't know Aubri..."
Kaa'raha watches the other gryphons, lacking anything to contribute.
Aubri nods at Moonfrost and looks at Surukk. "Then I have to go to her. I won't strain myself, but she might not react to anyone else."
Surukk hisses. "I knew I couldn't hold you down long. Hurrrh. All right, will you at least agree to travel by carry basket?"
MoonFrost nods, for Aubri /does/ have a point there. "She may react to me or Wind, though we haven't tried it before..." A glance is given to her mate, for she has to help this time.. she can't stay behind and do nothing.
Aubri brushes off the suggestion. "I'm all right walking."
Windshadow nods, turning likewise thankful eyes on the others. He says nothing about the injuries that kept him from arriving until too late to help his mate... "I have seen no sign of Dove, but I swear I'll turn the entire sphere upside down if I have to help find her."
Surukk shakes his head. "She feels alive, to me, I can not explain it. It is just a feeling. But she's hiding somehow I can't quite define. Hurrh."
Surukk says, "I can search for supplies there too. I'll get a carry lift together, Aubri. Just try not to run when we're there. I'll be back shortly."
MoonFrost nods as she listens, making her own plans to go with the group. Whispering aside to Carla, the ever helpful nursery aide, she arranges to have the gryphoness watch over her eggs while she leaves.
Surukk tromps off, looking badly groomed and heavy-shouldered. He's gone for a good twenty minutes.
Windshadow glances at MoonFrost for a long, visibly pained moment. His beak opens as he begins to protest her going along, but he just can't. Dove is too close to both of them for him to try and deny his mate's participation in the search, despite the danger.
Surukk returns, with a large carry-basket being carried with a couple of unflightworthy but otherwise well scouts.
MoonFrost stands up, ready to follow the others back towards the aerie even though she doesn't wish to see the destruction of the home she's become to love so much.
Surukk says, "You know how this works, Aubri. I'll be in harness at your upper right. Anyone else wish to join?"
Windshadow nods to MoonFrost and stands with her, his bulk reassuringly close and warm.
Aubri clambers on to the basket with a look that very clearly states any scouts who laugh will be summarily shredded, feeling rather useless.
Windshadow says, "I'll help."
Kaa'raha says, "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Windshadow manages not to look as amused by the sight as he is, knowing it would only make things difficult.
MoonFrost gives Aubri a grin...
Windshadow says, "Perhaps help us fly the basket."
Surukk murmurs to Aubri, "Say something to the scouts so they'll respect your bravery in accepting a healer's help. It may help them."
Kaa'raha nods her head, and she gets off her rump, standing to her full height, with a shake of her brown-gold feathers and flick of her stubby tail. "I would be happy to help fly the basket, if I may."
Surukk looks to Kaa'raha. "You look strong, good, it is just like power lifting. Watch for my cues and calls, and I will help you out. I am Surukk." He says just his name, no titles.
Aubri nods at Kaa, trying to think of something appropriate to say as per Surukk's suggestion. He gives up in a foul mood, shaking out his feathers instead.
Surukk murmurs to Aubri, "Then tell them why you are going."
Kaa'raha nods to the huge Windhavener. "I am Kaa'raha." If she had titles herself, she would give them, but there are none to give. "I will do as you say."
MoonFrost stands ready to follow the others, quiet for now.
Windshadow pads forward to take his place in one corner of the carry-basket assembly. He watches MoonFrost with tangible affection and waits for the preparations to end.
Surukk says, "Kaa'raha, Good. Good to meet you." He sets the harness up and gives a few more tips. Then away they go, wings pounding the air into meek submission."

Southeastern Sky - Magnarth Range
Cold gray mountains rise up all around you, blocking your view any way you look
besides down. Beneath is a series of ridges and valleys filled with trees and
life. Here and there on the seemingly impossibly steep slopes is an occasional
mountain goat... though the shapes disappear rapidly when they see something
gliding above them. The mountains hem you in enough to make soaring difficult,
but not impossible, and the valley serves to capture a decent amount of heat and
send it upwards.

Base of Grylra Aeries - Churnel Mountains
This long plateau deep in the Churnel Mountains runs roughly north/south. Great
towering gray rock rises in all directions around you - the only way out of this
valley is by a narrow trail that follows a rocky ledge to the northeast. One
enormous black stone spire remains standing at one side of this exit, a solitary
gatepost, smooth and perfect. It's companion lays fallen and shattered across
tens of meters of land. Dark, heavy smoke drifts along close to the ground,
seeping from several of the caves that are scattered about the southern and
western of the plateau. Dozens of short stone spikes lay shattered and toppled
all around, only a couple remain upright, standing perhaps three meters high.
There are several large blackened lumps scattered about the sandy ground, the
more intact ones seem to have once been insectoid in nature... but most of them
are broken into pieces. The air stinks of death and smoke. The plateau continues
quite a distance to the north, and you can make out a wide steaming crater
there.

Surukk and the team carry in Aubri in a carry basket, letting him down surprisingly calmly. The struts underneath compress, absorbing the initial impact.
Aubri climbs off and starts looking around somewhat frantically, "Dove? Dove!"
Surukk hisses, "Don't run or fly, Aubri, you'll split yourself open again. We're here, so you don't have to hurry around."
MoonFrost brings up the rear, wings flaring briefly as she touches down. She too begins to look for her missing friend, glancing towards Aubri as he begins to panic. She begins to open her beak, only to hear her own thoughts and words uttered by Surukk instead.
Surukk unclips from the carry basket lines and walks the line out from the corner before laying it down, a procedure, it seems.
Aubri pads to one of the few short pillars remaining upright, tapping on its side, thinking perhaps she shielded herself in the stone..
The wind whistles through the plateau in a sorrowful whine. No signs of life are here. Not even a single blade of grass is left.
Windshadow frees himself from the carrier and leaves the line as it lays, more concerned with the search than convenience at the moment. He gazes around slowly and sharply, and shakes his head. "A wasteland. Devastated to the last cave."
Surukk sits down slowly, panting from the exertion, and lets the enormity of the terrible damage sink in. "It's as bad as Windhaven was..." He sneezes. "The smell of death is still here."
MoonFrost seems to wrinkle her beak as the stench of death and smoke hits her. Glancing around, she takes in the damage done to her former home.
Windshadow says in a low tone, "It surrounds us."
Windshadow pads towards the toppled gate spire. That more than anything seems to symbolize the terrible toll for him.
Surukk says, "We must think carefully. Dove knew stone like no one else. We need to look for any stone structures that are different than you all remember... things in new places... or a cave, sealed up."
MoonFrost nods her head as she hears Surukk speak and looks over the aerie with new eyes, though so much of it has changed.
Aubri ignores all the gloomy scents and sights, searching only for a hint of Dove. He moves slowly north, tapping the fallen pillars, looking at the ground.. as if she might be just below his feet.
Surukk says, "Aubri? Aubri...what places here were special to Dove?"
Amongst all the fallen rubble surrounding the area it is next to impossible to tell new from old.
Surukk pads along, his feet turning black from the soot.
Surukk says, "Everyone, try to hold your heads up and breath upwind from where you step, if you can. This soot can make you sick."
Aubri pads northward toward his home, rustling his wings. "Do you think she had time to get anywhere particular?"
Windshadow glances back at Surukk's question and says after a moment, "Didn't she visit the burial peak at times?"
Surukk says, "Aubri... you know the layout better than me. Where was your cave?"
Windshadow gazes around, trying to get his bearings. "Where was she when she was... overbeared?"
Aubri pads back south. "Back here. My home is.. farther north." He puts a claw on the fallen post, murmuring, "She made these."
Kaa'raha frees herself from the carry basket and goes through the motions of following Surukk's earlier example of how to lay the line. She then starts to look around as well, trying to see any signs, looking to the other gryphons. She raises her head high as she moves through the soot, quickly gaining socks and gloves.
MoonFrost shakes her head, trying to figure out the aerie now. Her remembrance of the day is hazy for she'd been worried about her eggs. She points, "The caves were over there.."
Windshadow nods to Aubri, and cocks an eye towards the intact post. Sidling closer, he studies it up and down then lays a claw on it. "When did the other fall?"
Surukk grunts. "She will make new ones some day, Aubri. I remember how she was when she got upset... I think she'd try to go somewhere that was important to her emotionally. Aubri, point those places out to us, please."
MoonFrost agrees with Surukk and turns to Aubri... "Where did the two of you always sneak off too to be alone? Besides your cave?"
Aubri taps one pillar, then the other. "I don't think that's it, Moonfrost."
Surukk mutters, "Maybe she wanted to be above it all." He walks around the base of the pillar then gathers his strength into his haunches and lifts up on a cloud of black dust, gaining height with each wing beat.
MoonFrost watches Surukk as he wings his way to the top. She pads up quietly near Windshadow, giving his shoulder a gentle nuzzle.
Surukk gets altitude, then cants sideways, to circle around the spire and get a look at the land. "Not up here!" he calls down.
Windshadow blinks and turns his head at the nuzzle, clicking beaks warmly with MoonFrost. Now more than ever he feels how dear and fragile everything they have together is.
MoonFrost shakes her head as she looks around again then.
Aubri puts his ear against the black pillar and softly says, "Dove.." He shakes his head and shrugs his wings. "This was her big contribution, she felt, something.. Permanent for the aerie.." he considers the fallen spire.
Surukk grunts as he angles and dips in the air currents... there are patterns in the burns, heaps of crumpled bodies, charred marks and pits. Hurhmh... pits. "The Krrzn'tai came up from below... search the holes if you find any!"
MoonFrost turns her head upwards, nodding once again and moves off to start searching again. She calls out softly as she looks around, hoping that her friend is at least conscious and can hear the calls.
Windshadow frowns slightly, and asks, "What state was she in, when... it... happened?"
MoonFrost peers back, "What happened?" Again, she missed a lot during that time, and hasn't been caught up with everything yet. Heck... she only just found out that Dove was missing!
Aubri says simply "On." He circles the standing pillar, looking for anything unusual?
The fact that the standing pillar is still standing, considering the destruction around it hints at something....but you're not sure what...some connection...???
Surukk calls out, "Wait!" and gets some more altitude. Surukk circles to back wing and land atop the spire... tough to do.
MoonFrost pauses as she begins to pad away from the area. Turning, she looks up, watching Surukk for a moment before padding back towards Aubri..
Aubri yells at the top of his lungs, "Dove, come HERE!!"
Windshadow peers up at Surukk, then begins examining the base, where the spire enters the ground.
At first, the only sound heard is the rustling of the wind through the broken plateau and gryphons' feathers. Then, at first so faint as to be thought a trick of the mind, a rumbling can be heard. Slowly, it gets louder until you are sure it's no trick of the mind. It then gets louder and louder, as though picking up steam quickly. The ground rocks, the small pebbles actually start to shake under claw. Suddenly, without warning, the ground cracks, splitting open. With that tremendous split, the rumbles and shakings stop. All goes quiet again...if only for a brief few seconds.
Surukk scrabbles at the surface and falls away, dropping a good sixty feet... regains his attitude, tries again and winds up clutching the top.
Surukk gives out a loud predatory skree!
Surukk says, "There! She is there! There!"
MoonFrost blinks, almost falling to the ground as it moves beneath her claws. "Wha...???"
Just when curiosity starts to win as to what's down in the ground, a dirty white claw reaches out of the earth, reaching up from the depths below to grab the edge of the crack. It is slowly followed by another dirty white claw. Slowly, bit by bit, a dirty, but still metallic gryphoness scrambles out of the crack in the ground and stands still, ready for it's next command. At first glimpse, she seems the same as before, but upon closer inspection, one might notice she's a little thinner than before... and is covered in numerous small scratches all over.
Aubri bounds toward the crack heedless of his aching side, reaching down to grip her claw and help her out of the hole! "Skies, you're safe!.. Turn--no, wait.. Follow me." He pads hurriedly back to the carry basket, looking impatiently at the others. "Come on, let's go, let's go! Get back to the river."
Surukk gives out a loud predatory skree!
MoonFrost gives out a loud predatory skree!
MoonFrost skrees as she hears Aubri's shout at finding Dove. She hangs back though, waiting to be sure it's 'safe' to approach the metallic gryphoness.
Dove follows Aubri silently and obediently to the carry basket. She shows no signs that she's hurt, or at least that she feels any, or that she's even tired...spooky.
Windshadow staggers, more from surprise than the actual trembling. His head snaps around alertly as he tries to find the source of the strange quake, and his eye is caught by the crevice opening in the ground. He skreeeees, both in alert and in joy at seeing her, but grows quiet at her strange behavior. Looking between her and Aubri, he pads closer. Something is decidedly not right here.
Aubri looks back and forth at Moon and Windshadow. "Leave her alone, she's better off like this until we get back.. home.. so let's hurry, yes??"
Surukk drops down like a... well, okay, like a cheese loaf, not a bullet, he IS a Windhavener after all.
MoonFrost nods her head, knowing the truth behind those words. "Yes... back... across the river.
Dove shows no recognition to her friends, offers no comments to return to the camp by the river, nothing. She's like a glinting silver statue with glowing red eyes.
Aubri taps his talons, waiting for the harnessing to begin.
Surukk approaches Dove... speaking... "Dove... it is Surukk. Aubri is here. You're safe... you need to let your guard down and relax, Dove. We're going to carry you to a place you can rest. Will you respond, Dove?"
Aubri shakes his head at Surukk, "No! Don't. She'll be exhausted. It's better if we get her back where we can care for her than try to move her after.
Dove still shows no sign of response, not even to Surukk's familiar and reassuring voice. No emotions, no physical signs, it's hard to even tell if she's breathing. She just stands and stares. And with her eyes glowing solid, it's impossible to tell where she's looking. One can only assume it's forward she looks to.
MoonFrost keeps to the back, allowing Aubri and Surukk to handle Dove. Her eyes keep a watchful gaze over the group though...
Kaa'raha hooks herself back to the carry basket.
MoonFrost watches the others get hooked back up and once again, waits, bringing up the rear.

Surukk has arrived.
Windshadow unhitches himself from the harness, turning to study Dove as she lands and stands close by... he's positive now. She has to be stuck in some kind of automatic mode. A survival instinct perhaps?
MoonFrost lands, a brief flare of her wings slowing her down. She watches the metallic Dove carefully, standing to the side as she waits for Aubri and Surukk to take care of her.
Dove lands right after Aubri does. No flare, no show, just airborne one second, standing on the ground the next. She remains where she is, waiting for her next commands.
Aubri stands up and crosses to his mate, nuzzling his shoulder under her head as he tells her to lie down, then whispers in her ear to return to her normal state.
Altair is asleep, for the moment at lest.
Kaa'raha removes herself from the harness, moving out to rest the line on the ground. Curiously, with head tilted, her earth-colored eyes watch the strange metallic gryphoness, never having seen the like before.
Surukk sets about the harness clips and lines, arranging them for the others to retrieve the thing. He sends a disabled scout to bring the clearest water he can find, and another to get a warming-stone pulled out of one of the fires.
Surukk murmurs to Kaa'raha. "Amazing, isn't she. Dove is more than a gryphon. She is an ancient weapon, too. A marvel of Shrilk."
Windshadow nods, but says dryly, "A funny thing, a weapon which does not want to BE a weapon. If you ask me, she is more gryphon than anything else."
Dove lays down as ordered, stretching out on her side. As Aubri quietly gives her the command to turn off, she lets out a sigh, as though she'd been holding her breath for a very long time. Her eyes close shut as her body shudders, changing from metallic back to her normal self. It's almost as if the metallic coloring was melting off her like water, being absorbed back under the feathers and fur. In a more normal state, it's easier to see...she's thinner than before. The scratches are still there, but they are superficial at worst.
Kaa'raha nods her head and quietly says to Surukk, "Yes... amazing..."
Surukk answers Windshadow, "That is what I love about her best."
Windshadow steps closer, watching her intently, almost breathlessly. Please....
Aubri strokes her neck and curls up against his mate, spreading his wing over her and nuzzling gently to try to wake her. "Dove? Dooove.."
MoonFrost pads closer too, her gaze watching Dove's change intently as she nuzzles against Windshadow.
Windshadow lifts a wing and curls it shelteringly over MoonFrost's back, drawing her close against his side as they both wait for some sign of their old, dear friend.
Dove groans softly, the sound coarse and guttural, as if from a very dry and parched throat. Her eyes squeeze even tighter closed before she slowly opened them, the color gone back to her normal pink. She looks around dazedly as she coughs. Yes, her throat is very dry...as though she's not had water for days...which she hasn't. She opens her beak to try to speak when she sees Aubri nearby, but nothing but a tiny croak comes out.
Aubri shakes his head. "Shhh." He waves for a skin of water and what food can be spared, stroking her body slowly. "I know.. I know." He whispers.
MoonFrost looks around for some water, then sees Surukk with it already..
Surukk hurries, or rather, galumphs, to mix a powder for dissolution into a large flask of water the scout brings. He approaches Dove. "Dove, bright eyes, it is me, Surukk. The healer. You should drink this."
Windshadow doesn't have to move, since the other gryphons have the situation well in claw. he watches and waits, knowing Dove is in the best possible care with her mate by her side.
Dove gladly drinks the water down slowly and carefully. The blessedly cool water is just what her throat needs. She nods slowly, a bit stiff still, to Surukk to thank him since she can't say it just yet...
Surukk says, "This will help you with your thirst and give you some more strength. Just be careful not to do too much. You're safe here."
Dove nibbles a little at the food provided her. But the strain of being active, albeit in stone, still took more out of her than you'd think. She slowly lays her head down with a soft sigh, closing her eyes as sleep finally takes her.
MoonFrost sighs softly as Dove falls asleep. Glancing towards the others, she wanders back to her makeshift nest, relieving Carla. A soft thank you is whispered as the nursery aide leaves the nest and Moonfrost climbs back in, hugging her eggs close to her body.
Surukk grunts in satisfaction as the pair drop off. That's a good mix.
Kaa'raha settles to her stomach in a subdued manner.
