| Feb. 14 & 15, 2002 - Edmund Proposes to Brooke Brooke has been waiting all day at work for Edmund to remember Valentine's Day. Meanwhile he's been picking out an engagement ring and arranging his surprise with the help of Sam, Maddie, and Jamie. Brooke arrives home alone and hesitates before entering. Edmund is waiting inside sitting on the steps and looking at the ring. When he hears Brooke at the door he quickly puts it in his pocket. Brooke: Edmund. Why, what are you -- oh, my. [Sees Valentine decorations.] You really did remember. Edmund: Of course. Surprised? Brooke: Totally. I expected nothing like this. Actually, I had a small warning, so I did know what to expect. Edmund: [big smile] No, you didn't. [Edmund picks up Brooke and heads out the door] Brooke: What? Edmund: Door. Brooke: Door? Oh, door. [Brooke closes the door] [Brooke and Edmund arrive at the deserted beach.] Brooke: Well. This is different. Edmund: Yeah, that's what I was hoping for. Brooke: The beach at night -- in February. Edmund: You know, this may be a first. Brooke: It is for me. Edmund: You know, most guys labor over this sort of thing. Brooke: What sort of thing would that be? Edmund: The time, the setting, the place, the mood. Brooke: The wind-chill factor? Edmund: Things were going a little too smoothly back at the house. Brooke: Do you have something against heating and indoor plumbing? Edmund: Brooke, if you don't stop talking the plumbing and the indoor -- you're going to totally mess with my Zen. Brooke: What is your Zen tonight, exactly? [Edmund goes down on one knee and takes her hand in his.] Brooke: Oh, boy. Edmund: Brooke, you know, you read about people who -- who come together after years and years of being apart. [He puts their hands parallel to each other--not touching.] That's not exactly us because we've been living parallel lives for -- for years. You know what else they say? They say two parallel lines can never meet. Guess that's why I never liked math. [Their fingers fold over as they clasp hands.] [Edmund holds up a diamond ring for Brooke to see.] Brooke: Oh! Edmund: I want to grow old with you, Brooke. But I want to live every second until then like it's our last. Brooke: Oh, Edmund. Edmund: I love you, Brooke. Will you marry me? Edmund: Brooke? Brooke: No. Edmund: No? Brooke: No, not -- no, I mean -- Edmund: Not no? Not, not...no? Brooke: Yes! Oh, God, Edmund. Edmund: You had me scared to death. Brooke: I can't believe this. Edmund: You like the ring? Brooke: Oh, forget the ring! Kiss me. [Edmund stands up and they kiss.] Edmund: You really want me to forget the ring? Brooke: What, are you nuts? [He puts the ring on her finger.] Brooke: Oh. Oh, my. Oh. Edmund: It looks beautiful. Brooke: Look, it fits perfectly. Edmund: So do we. I love you, Brooke, more than I can say. Brooke: Oh, Edmund, I love you, too. [More kissing.] [Brooke and Edmund are now sitting on a blanket with his arms around her.] Brooke: Did you have second thoughts? Edmund: No. No. No, I just -- I just thought I would do this, you know, with the kids and Aunt Phoebe. Brooke: Oh, no. Edmund: Well, I did, you know. We're going to be a huge family and all. And then I just thought that would be kind of taking the romance out of it by using, you know, my kids, your son, and Dolly Levi to help us out. Brooke: I'm so glad you reconsidered. Edmund: Me too. I did ask your son, Jamie, though. Brooke: You asked my son what? Edmund: If he'd be OK if I married you. Brooke: You asked my son for permission to marry me? Edmund: Yeah, would have grounded him if he said no, but he was pretty cooperative. Brooke: He's just a softy underneath it all, you know? Edmund: He loves you. You know, my kids are still on the ceiling since I told them that I was going to do this. Brooke: Really? Edmund: Yeah, will they ever come down? Brooke: Eventually, yeah. Brooke: You know, we have a lot of things to think about. We have to decided where we're going to live and, you know, ground rules for the kids and -- make me stop. Edmund: Stop. [She turns and faces him.] Brooke: Make me stop. [Edmund kisses her to make her stop.] Brooke: Better. Edmund: Brooke -- Brooke: I'm right there with you. Come on, let's go, future husband....and slave. Edmund: Sure you're ready to go? Brooke: Edmund, as long as I am with you, I don't care where we go. [They walk off the beach admiring the ring and stop to kiss as they leave the beach.] [Jamie is watching for Brooke and Edmund.] Jamie: Everyone, look casual. Quick, this is it. [Maddie, Sam, Phoebe, and Jamie look engrossed in their books.] Brooke: Ahem. Jamie: Hey, Mom. Brooke: Hey. Edmund: Hey. Wow, look at you guys -- reading, coloring. Phoebe: Quiet night. How about you two? Brooke: Oh, very quiet. Edmund: Nothing special. Brooke: Oh, you know, oh, I think I'm so tired, I'm going to go right up to bed. Edmund: Yeah, me, too. I think I'll take the kids and go home. It's -- it's too quiet here. It's creeping me out. Jamie: All right, cut it out. Sam: Hey! Maddie: What did she say? Edmund: "She" who, Honey? [Maddie grabs Brooke's hand.] Maddie: When you wear this ring, that means yes, right? Sam: Does it, Daddy? Edmund: Does it, Brooke? Brooke: Yeah, it does. [Kids cheer] Jamie: You did it right, right? Brooke: Oh, he did it great, Honey. Did you guys honestly think I'd say no to this guy, hmm? Maddie: Daddy said it was up to you. Sam: And he said sometimes things don't always go the way you plan. Brooke: Well, you know what -- sometimes they do. {Edmund asks Phoebe if she's ready to see more of him. She is. Everyone is smiling and happy.] Edmund: [Handing her cake.] Here you go, Aunt Phoebe. If the kids are going into sugar shock, you're going right with them. Phoebe: Thank you, Darling. [Edmund and Brooke meet on the other side of the room.] Edmund: Well, your Aunt Phoebe looks very happy. Brooke: She is biting back an "I told you so" so hard that her head is vibrating. Edmund: [Feeds her cake.] Here, practice for the wedding. Good? Brooke: Mmm, great. [She feeds him cake.] I promise you I am not going to be one of those brides that smashes the cake in the groom's face. Edmund: That would be nasty. Brooke: Yeah. But then I would kiss it all off. Edmund: That would be nastier. Brooke: Mm-hmm. Are you still glad that we came home tonight? Edmund: Yes -- to a point. Brooke: I want to be with you tonight. Edmund: I need to be with you tonight. Brooke: So how are we going to pull this off without anyone knowing what we're trying to pull off?.... Oh, you know, that beach and the freezing cold is not such a bad idea after all. Edmund: Mm-hmm. Give me time, English, I'll work this out. Brooke: [Slipping her hand inside his shirt.] Make it snappy, Honey. I mean it. [Sam, Maddie, Jamie, and Phoebe all leave the room without Brooke and Edmund noticing.] Phoebe: Lead the way, Jamie. Jamie: [Quietly] You guys owe me one. Edmund: Brooke? Brooke: Yes? Edmund: Turn around. Magic. Brooke: Holy cow. Where did they all go? Edmund: I think I caught Jamie's eye as he was wheeling Phoebe out. Brooke: Do you think we need to tuck in Sam and Maddie? Edmund: Not tonight. Brooke: My son is my hero. Edmund: Hey, what about me? Brooke: You are my hero, too. [Brooke reaches up and kisses him.] [Brooke walks over and stands in front of a picture of Laura, her little girl who was killed by the drunk driver.] Brooke: Edmund, this is the most wonderful night of my life. Edmund: It won't be the last. Brooke: You promise me that, OK? Edmund: I do. Brooke: No, I mean it, I mean it, because I promise it for you, too. I mean, you know, like, if we're working on a deadline for "Tempo" and, you know, we're holding one of the kids' heads over the john and the other one is spiking a fever, I promise you, and I want us to promise each other, that we will think of this moment. OK? Edmund: OK. Brooke: I love you so much that my hair hurts. Edmund: Want me to kiss it and make it better? Brooke: Can you try? Edmund: Yeah. [He starts kissing the side of her head.] Brooke: Oh, you're good. Edmund: I know I am. Brooke: I love you. And I can't wait to be married to you. Edmund: I love you. And I will always take care of you, Brooke. [More kissing.] |
