Brooke comes home and finds that Jamie is not with the baby-sitter like he is supposed to be.  She starts to get worried, and calls her aunt Phoebe to see is she has him, but she doesn't.  Soon after, Edmund walks in carrying a fussy Jamie in his arms.

Brooke: Oh you're back!

Edmund: Say... "Hi ma!  Noooo problem!"

Brooke: Jamie!  Oh!  I was calling his doctor, I was worried.  Oh my Boo boo ... hello!  (Edmund hands Jamie over to Brooke)

Edmund: You didn't get my note?

Brooke: No, no I didn't.  You left a note?

Edmund: Yeah I left it right ... right here.

Brooke: No I didn't see it.

Edmund: Oh hey buddy ... it's okay.

Brooke: Come here Boo, come here, oh it's all right.

Edmund: Yeah.

Brooke: He feels a little warm.

Edmund: Well he had a little temperature, 101.2.  Yeah, but he's fine now.    (Edmund is rubbing Jamie's head)

Brooke: Ohhhh.

Edmund: Yeah he woke up a little burning.

Brooke: You took him to the doctor?

Edmund: No I took him to the emergency room.  Yeah, the pediatricians office was closed.  But I figured he needed a little attention.

Brooke: Yeah.

Edmund: Yeah, he was real cranky.

Brooke: Yeah, you need to go to sleep.

Edmund: I gave him some of that pink stuff in the ear and he goes, "Oh I'm great now!"

Brooke: Yeah?

Edmund: Hey bud!

Brooke: You know what I think he needs to go nite nite.  Yeah.

Edmund: Ohhh... okay, you wanna go to bed?

Brooke: All right, listen ... thank you.

Edmund: Here let me give you this...here's the prescription ... all right...  Just give him a little drop full tonight and he'll be fine.

Brooke: You're a tired baby.  (Brooke takes Jamie to bed while Edmund is talking to her)

Edmund: Okay?  All right and then three times a day for the next week.  And uh... don't take him swimming, and bring him in for a check up in about a week.  Yeah.  Just a common ear infection that's all, he's fine.  (Brooke walks back into the room)

Brooke: Oh, you know what?

Edmund: Hmmm?

Brooke: I am so impressed that you knew what to do.

Edmund: Oh well it doesn't take a neurosurgeon Brooke to figure out if a kid wakes up and he's got a fever and he's rubbing his ear and he's crying.  You just look up ear infection and if it says seek medical attention, you do it.  I just brought him there and he was fine.  The doctor loved him, the nurse loved him.  Happy ending.  How was your meeting?  (Brooke walks over to Edmund and puts her arms around him.)

Brooke: You are going to make a wonderful father.

Edmund: Oh yeah?

Brooke: You know why?  You know all the right moves, and Jamie fell asleep right when his head hit the pillow, just like you said.

Edmund: We had a deal.  (They both laugh)

Brooke: Thank you.  (Edmund kisses Brooke) What was that for?

Edmund: That's for putting up with me in all this Dimitri business.  And because it's nice to do something for you for a change.  (Edmund walks to the kitchen)  Oh what do we have here?  Very healthy junk.

Brooke: No! No!  Well, I mean there is lettuce and vegetables, and all that kind of stuff.  But there is excellent french bread, and cheese and... (Brooke grabs Edmund) turn around

Edmund: What?

Brooke: It's a surprise.  (Edmund laughs) Okay ... double chocolate fudge cake and carmel ripple.

Edmund: Much better.  (Edmund walks towards Brooke and rubs her shoulders.)

Brooke: You seem different.

Edmund: How?

Brooke: Calm, I don't know you seem easier about this Dimitri business.

Edmund: Well, maybe because I am.  You know Jack called before I took Jamie to the ER.  He filed a suit.

Brooke: All ready?

Edmund: Yeah the court has been officially notified.  Edmund Marick is the son and legal ire of Hugo Marick, and he wants his rights.

Brooke: So it's started.

Edmund: It's started.

Brooke & Edmund are in the kitchen cooking

Edmund: Next pay day, restaurant your choice, my treat.  I'll tell you Brooke, if you hadn't fed me in the last three weeks, I would have just wasted away.

Brooke: Listen, I think you had more things on your mind than food, and next pay day you are gonna have legal bills.

Edmund: Oh well me and Jack worked everything out.

Brooke: No I mean, I'm sure you did.  And Jack is very fair.  He's not going to charge you for unnecessary hours, but I mean he is a lawyer, his advice is expensive.

Edmund: You get what you pay for.  Brooke am I doing the right thing here?

Brooke: You are doing what you have to.  I just think it's a little scary taking on Dimitri because he has so much power and money.

Edmund: Well it's not like I'm...I don't know, maybe it won't be that bad.

Brooke: How?

Edmund: I'm not asking for a pound of flesh from the guy, I just want access to Hugo's personal papers.  I mean even Dimitri has boxes that he didn't see, and since Hugo wrote that will, maybe there are some kind of notes that he kept about him.

Brooke: Maybe.

Edmund: Yeah, or a journal.  Some kind of written proof to simplify things.

Brooke: That would be wonderful.

Edmund: I just want this whole thing behind me.

Brooke: Same here.

Edmund: You know I've got a life I want to lead, in front of me.  A life with you.  (Brooke grabs Edmund by the jacket)

Brooke: I wish things could always be simple and easy.

Edmund: Do you know how much I love you?  (Edmund and Brooke kiss)   (Edmund is on the telephone)

Edmund: Yeah Allen thanks, I appreciate you telling me this information.  Okay I'll talk to you later.  (talking to Brooke now) Well that was a reporter friend of mine Allen Rose.  He just told me some jerk in the courtroom just leaked the information that the subpoenas are coming out tomorrow.

Brooke: So word is out.

Edmund: Yeah, I guess so

Brooke: I wonder if Dimitri has heard.

Edmund: Oh yeah, yeah.  Allen told him.

Brooke: Tonight?

Edmund: At Wildwind.  My brother blew his stack and threw him out of the house.  You know I didn't plan on all of this stuff to hit the fan so soon.

Brooke: How do you feel about it?

Edmund: I'm okay.  I'm okay.  You know it's a funny thing, I wasn't really sure why I had to do it until this afternoon.  But now I know why.

Brooke: Why? What happened this afternoon?

Edmund: Well me and Jamie had a meaningful discussion.  (Brooke laughs)

Brooke: Jamie only knows two words... Mama, and Mine.

Edmund: Well, he knows a little bit more.  This was a non verbal conversation though. (Edmund smiles)

Brooke: Oh one of those

Edmund: Yeah one of those metaphysical kind of things.  He needed something.  He was in pain and he was hurting.  You know, and he reached out for me, he was counting on me to do something, and I did it.

Brooke: Yes.

Edmund: And when it was over, he reached out and he held me, and he smiled.

Brooke: He loves you.

Edmund: No, he trusts me Brooke. (Edmund holds Brooke's hand) I'll tell you, when I was ten or twelve, I...I never really wanted to have kids.  I said NO!  And then when I got older, and I saw how parents who have been beaten as kids, how they beat their own kids, and this whole disease just goes on and on and on, from, generation to generation, I was just real sure of my decision.

Brooke: And now?

Edmund: And now I've got you, and Jamie.

Brooke: And now you've changed your mind?

Edmund: Yeah I have.  I have.  You know I realize that I can't change my past, but I don't have to let it determine how I lead the rest of my life or treat my children.  And it's almost like finding out who I am has been sort of an affirmation of... of... of... myself, self discovery.  And you know I tell you something, it's taking responsibility for yourself.  Brooke I can maybe be the one to end this violence once and for all.

Brooke is checking on Jamie, and walks back into the living room and sits down on the couch next to Edmund.

Brooke: Well, Jamie is out like a light.

Edmund: Is he feeling better?

Brooke: Yeah, his skin is much cooler.

Edmund: Good. Fever down?  (Edmund puts his hand on Brooke's leg)

Brooke: Yeah much better.

Edmund: Just like the doctor predicted.

Brooke: No it was good, you caught the ear infection early.  (Brooke starts scratching Edmund's arm) That was good, he may ever sleep through the night.

Edmund: Really?  (They both laugh and then Edmund starts rubbing Brooke's leg) Well, I told you we had a deal, and he promised!  (Brooke starts playing with Edmund's hair)

Brooke: You want some more cake and ice cream?

Edmund: No, no, no.  I'm stuffed.  This is the best dinner I've had in a week.

Brooke: And you thought I was feeding you healthy junk right?

Edmund: That shows you what I know!  No really this is the best night I have had in ages.  (Brooke puts her hand on Edmund's face)

Brooke: It's not ever yet.  (Brooke and Edmund have a long passionate kiss.  Afterward, Edmund does a really quiet whistle ... like wow that was a kiss!)

Edmund: One thing is kind of odd though.

Brooke: What?

Edmund: Dimitri, why haven't I heard from Dimitri?
