The Way It Should Have Been
By Marcie

This takes place the morning after Tad and Brooke came home from Switzerland after finding out Dixie had died. Brooke said some terrible things to Edmund the day before about not remembering what it was like to lose his wife and she postponed the wedding.   It's the next morning and Brooke and Edmund are in bed. Brooke's still asleep and Edmund is watching her.

Brooke: (opening her eyes) Good morning. How long have you been awake?

Edmund: Not very long. You're very beautiful when you sleep.

Brooke: Oh. (laughing) Thanks. About yesterday, I...I'm really sorry  about the things I said to you. Dixie's death has really thrown me.

Edmund: You and Dixie had a special bond. I remember when we first  met you were so worried about Dixie after Tad's death.

Brooke: Yes, she meant a lot to me, but...Oh, I don't know.

Edmund: Talk to me Brooke. You're shutting me out like you always do  when you're scared. What are you afraid of?

Brooke: I'm not afraid.

Edmund: Brooke this is me you're talking to. I know you better than  you know yourself. Tell me what it is. Is it getting married? Have  you changed your mind about marrying me?

Brooke: (taking his hand) Oh, Edmund. All I've ever wanted since the  day I met you is to marry you.

Edmund: Then what is it?

Brooke: I don't know. Ever since Laura died I haven't been able to  shake the fear that I'm going to lose the people I love most. And it  came true the last time we were engaged. I lost you to Maria.

Edmund: Brooke you've never lost me and you never will. Remember when  we first met I told you we weren't strangers, that we'd always known  each other?

Brooke: I remember. I felt it too.

Edmund: Well, that's how it always has been and always will be for  us. You're a part of me Brooke. No matter who I've been with you've  always been in my heart.

Brooke: And you've always been in mine.

Edmund: I know that. You know I've been waiting all my life for you  Brooke.

Brooke: What do you mean?

Edmund: Well, I figured when things didn't work out for us last time  I thought the timing was just bad, you know, you weren't ready.

Brooke: I really screwed up.

Edmund: (laughing) Yes you did. Seriously, though, since Maria died  I've been waiting for you to give me a sign that you were ready for  me again. I knew it was inevitable that we would be together.

Brooke: I didn't know that you still wanted me. You never told me.

Edmund: Yes I did Brooke. Everytime we were together. Every time I  dropped everything and came running for you. I don't do that for  anyone else. In your heart you knew, you just weren't ready. Until  now. Trust me Brooke. Trust us. You know we're meant to be together.

The scene fades with them in a great big kiss
