Bela Fleck & the Flecktones
I was told about this band from a friend of mine who knows that I love banjo and the new age jazz type music. When he first told me about a band that was 'jazz banjo' I thought he had lost his mind. 'Jazz banjo??'  I asked myself. That can't possibly exist. Jazz just isn't done on the banjo.. The first time I heard them I realized he used the term for lack of a better term ...... but he was awfully close. This band is totally amazing!!  I have since become hooked in mind, body and soul. In fact I'd say I'm their biggest fan and I have the tattoo on my leg to prove it. It's of the band's logo, the Cosmic Hippo  (that's him whirling above), with Bela's autograph, on the outside of my right calf. Now if that isn't true fandom I don't know what is.

Let me introduce the band to you if you're not familiar with them:

On bass is the best player on the planet: Victor Wooten. This man has fingers so fast I sometimes can't believe it's only one person playing the notes. He is a living legend in my opinion. Next is his brother, Futureman, aka Futch, on drums with his main instrument being the Synthaxe Drumitar. It's an instrument that is held like a guitar, but has all the sounds of percussion. It's a very unique instrument.  Jeff Coffin is the master that mainly plays saxophone, sometimes two at a time, but he is known to pick up a flute, clarinet and the occasional whistle. When he plays two at a time it is quite a sight to behold ..... and hear.

Then there's the 'Big Flecktone', Bela Fleck. This man is a virtuoso on the banjo, making it do things never done before. Playing any music from hardcore bluegrass to lilting, soothing classical music. It is amazing what he does. Once in a while he picks up guitar, too, but the banjo is his specialty.  I just love wataching and hearing this man play. Besides being such a great musician he is very easy on the eyes, in my opinion. An absolutely gorgeous specimen of the male human species.

These guys are a great band not only in performing, but also in being fan-friendly. It's not unusal for them to come back out after a show, while the roadies are
tearing down and packing up, to meet and greet their faithful following of fans.
