Topic:  African Music

Activity Time:  1 class period

Materials Needed
1.  Audio or videotape of African Music for example of the music group Ladysmith Black Mambazo
2.  rope
3.  construction paper, pencils, crayons
4.  CD player or tape player
5.  large cans with plastic tops

Objectives:
As a result of this activity, the learner will:
listen to and appreciate African music
make an African drum


Introduction:
1.  Play African music and have the students decribe what intruments they may hear

Major Instructional Sequence:
1.  While music is playing explain that the drum is an important part of African music
2.  Explain how to wrap the cans in construction paper
3.  Wrap a piece of paper over the top to form the drum skin
4.  Wrap the cans with rope to construct the drum so that it wraps around the top part   of the can and the bottom and loops around to make a strap for holding
5.  Allow the students to decorate their drums

Closure or Evaluation
1.  Allow the students to march with their drums to the music
2.  Allow the students to watch a tape of an African musica group like Ladysmith Black Mambazo
