Topic:  Storytelling and Oral Storytelling

Activity Time:  1 class period

Materials Needed
1.  various African literature and fiction


Objectives:
As a result of this activity, the learner will:
be introduced to various types of African literature
understand that Africa has a rich history of oral storytelling
understand that many times stories were told to explain the unexplainable


Introduction:
1.  Explain that in African culture there were storytellers called
griots that told the history of families orally and other stories
2.  Talk about the various African stories we have read at story time



Major Instructional Sequence:
1.  Read an African story like
Why Mosquitoes Buzz In People's Ears
2. 
Explain that this story was told to explain something unexplainable and compare to other books read
3.  Explain that oral storytelling was done without books and many times after dark
4.  Turn off the lights to set the mood and tell a story

Closure or Evaluation
1.  Encourage the students to come up with their own stories
