This page will tell you what we did for our homeschool in our school year from roughly October 2003 to October 2004. When we first started homeschooling in 2001, I had pulled my kids out of public school close to the end of their 5th and 3rd grade years. I won't go into the very long story about why we chose to homeschool. Not all public schools are bad, not all teachers are bad. My oldest son has Asperger Syndrome and the school system here just did not..... let's just say the school environment was not condusive to learning for my kids. In 2001, we deschooled and tried to learn to love learning again. Then I found the book The Well Trained Mind in 2002 and fell in love with the classical way of learning. That first year we tried exactly what TWTM suggested and their schedule. It was a disaster! Thankfully I found some great yahoo groups that talked about "tweaking" the TWTM system. See below for a list of my favorites that are still active. We tried different products and tried different styles of homeschooling all with trying to follow classical learning. It was a crazy year! But so well worth it. Now we know what works for each kid and use what works for each one separately. We do use textbooks, workbooks, and some worksheets, but we also use movies, games, computer games, internet, life experiences, field trips, hands on learning, and anything else we can find to help us learn! I tried to come up with a title to describe our way of homeschooling...LOL...how do you describe a mixture of everything...classically eclectic unschooler? LOL What ever you want to call it, we love it and it is working for us and that's what counts.
When you click on the subjects below, a drop down menu will tell you what we used for 2003-2004. "D" is my oldest son, just turned 14. "S" is my daughter who is 12. And "B" is my 7 year old son.
