In 2001-2002 school year, Kayla sang the National Anthem at her school and also at surrounding schools for their basketball games.
Kayla received a special gift from a referee of the Salem, Indiana game, she received several medals he had earned in the Vietnam War including his Purple Heart. At the presentation, he stated "I have heard the National Anthem sang hundreds of times, but I have never been so moved by it before".
Kayla has also received a letter of encouragement from Indiana State Representative Dennie Oxley who has heard her sing at several community events.
