In September of 2004, Michelle Blinch became the cheer instructor for a dance program offered by the City of Brampton. The first 9-week session beginning on a Thursday Night at 6pm began with seven young girls between the ages of 10 - 16. The participants proceeded to learn a dance routine, several cheers and two basic stunts.
Half way through the first session Michelle recruited Megan Kitson to assist with the class. Together the two choreographed routines and fun cheers for the participants in the program not sure of where the future of the program would go. The parents night held in November at the end of session one was a success!
Over the holidays Megan and Michelle came up with new routine pieces and created a better instruction plan. The winter session brought four new girls into the program. Here the participants learned all the skills from the previous program but to make it more fun and unique, Michelle and Megan decided to show the girls how to choreograph their own cheers and utilize their own individual creativity and team-building skills. Results: The participants came out of the program with self-confidence and more energy than when they had first started.
Next came the spring session. This session is where our Cheerleading Program became what it is known as todayThe Ladydawgs Cheerleading Squad. The girls began coaching two 1-hour classes ranging in ages from 6 - 15 yrs. The program went from 7 participants to an outstanding 22 participants with only a 3 week interval in between the sessions!
With the growth of the program, the girls then proceeded to have meetings with their supervisors and the Brampton Minor Football Association to see if they could take the program to the next level! With an enthusiastic class Megan and Michelle decided to experiment on how the next level would work at a real Football game. All participants worked hard repeating the routines and the cheers until their performance was at its height of perfection. The Ladydawgs went to their first football game on Thursday June 9, 2005 and cheered for the Peewee Teams: Wild dogs and the Mad dogs. A wonderful experience and time was had by all!
Today the Ladydawgs perform for all the Brampton Football teams from house league to Peewee to JV and Varsity. As classes are still held for children from ages 6 - 12 (Ladydawgs in training) they will now be known as the "LadyPups"!
Come out and support the NEW LadyDawgs and LadyPups Cheerleading Teams at the next Brampton Football home game! |
