Desert Song

Dawn comes
Rustling desert morning
The Fire-Warrior lifts his head
Above Land's Edge at Sun-Goes-Up
I watch
I listen
The deer move quickly
They graze before the heat and
Coyotes come
They take their life from the sage
In the desert sand
The tiny deer
I wait not for them
I wait for the dusty coyote
He comes with silent steps
He watches
He listens
The deer
He watches them feed
I watch
I listen
He sees me not
This is the Way
The Hunter
The Prey
He hunts
Is hunted
The deer catch his scent
They run with Brother Wind
He snarls
But does not chase
They are gone
And there is only
The coyote
And me
The Hunter
The Prey
This is the Way
