MERINGUE SPICE CAKE 		Preheat oven to 350o

My Mother's favorite self-frosting and delicious cake!
			
1/2 C shortening		1/2 tsp cloves
1 C brown sugar, packed	1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 whole egg		1/2 C sour milk (or use 
1 egg yolk		1-1/4 tsp lemon juice in milk)
1-1/4 C flour			TOPPING:
1/2 tsp bkg. powder		1 egg white
1/2 tsp bkg. soda			1/2 C brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt			1/4 C chopped nuts

With electric mixer on medium, mix shortening w/sugar, then
egg and yolk for four minutes. At low speed, alternately add
flour and milk, mixing briefly. Turn into 8 or 9" pan.

TOPPING:
Beat egg white till stiff, gradually add the 1/2 C brown
sugar. Spread over batter and sprinkle with nuts.
Bake 45 - 50 minutes.
Cool in pan on rack. (Topping will crack as it cools.)
