Tudor Man`s garb a la Henry VIII
as seen at Aethelmearc Twelfth Night, Jan 12, 2008
This is my rendition of the famous Henry VIII portrait (see below) as modeled by my husband Gunnarr (aka Dave Gable).
The lighting in the locale was diffused and the white wall behind us caused the colors to darken...but I can tell you that the shaube (outer robe) is royal purple velvet with a dark-brown mink-look collar.  The doublet is antique gold brocade from the home-dec department of Jo-Ann Fabrics, embellished with antique gold Chinese gimp trim.  The dark spots down the front of the doublet and on the sleeves are 1" red jewels that I found in the form of elastic bracelets...I cut two of them apart and sewed the jewels on separately.  Gunnarr wears a cotton ruffle-edged shirt under the doublet.  The purple robe has black-and-gold trim on the sleeve puffs and along the lower hem--which I found in the form of embroidered fabric!  I cut apart the strips and appliqued them on with Wonder-Under (tm), which actually worked great even on the nap of the velvet!
And I even made Gunnar`s hose (had to; I couldn`t find any in his size!)
To top off the costume, he is wearing a black velvet Tudor cap with a white ostrich plume (which disappears against the white wall...)
I`ll post detailed pics soon...

You might recognize this black gown in it`s earlier form...it is inspired by Isabella di Medici (she`s sometimes known as "Laudomia di Medici" in some books)  The changes I made were to add sleeves, as were worn in the portrait.  Made up of 24 sections, bordered with silver cord that I overcast-stitched to the edges, with additional pearl clusters at each corner.  I also added more pearl clusters to the collar, and more silver cord on the sleeve rolls.  The sleeves are removeable; there are three sets of ties on each sleeve and corresponding rings inside the doublet armseye.
Ok, ok, I`ll post detail pics later too!
