Artemis, Goddess worshipped by the Amazons
Artemis and Diana are interchangeble, they are both goddess of the hunt. This particular Artemis statue was found under the floor of the city hall at Ephesus, probably buried to protect it from being destroyed during the razing of the temple. Old history books say those are eggs on her breasts, symbolizing fertility, but they look like breasts to me, and that is what current day historians think they are. Perhaps this is the very statue that the Amazons worshipped. At least they must have seen it, because it is supposed to have been housed in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the world. And maybe there is something to be said about the Amazons worshipping a goddess and sacrificing a breast to Her. Thus, the many breasts may symbolize the sacrifice to Artemis of Amazon breasts.
