| Dibbun Rescue In the Watermeadows; Indigo's Mission To begin with, I travel best alone. However, I would need some brawn just in case of any unexpected danger along the way. I contacted Axback to accompany me because we have often journeyed together. He agreed, so we set off the very next morning. Our first day was uneventful because vermin are quite scared of Redwall, as well as the rumors that envelop the Abbey. We slept in the afternoon, planning to travel at night so as to avoid wandering gangs of vermin. When we broke camp we had travelled about halfway between the Abbey and the Watermeadows, when we noticed a dim glow ahead. I crept close to it and discovered that it was the fire of a rather large vermin camp. The band had about a score and a half of mostly rats and stoats. The leader was a husky fox with a sabre nearly as large as my own. I went back to Axback and reported to him what I had seen, and proceeded to suggest that we left them alone and didn't cause any trouble. Two days later we reached the Watermeadows and ran into a foraging party of toads, probably looking for travelers such as ourselves. Axback pushed me behind him, took out his axe, and lowered it to the oncoming toads. I concelaed myself beneath my cloak and kept a paw on my sabre in case of trouble. Axback disputed with about a third of the party before the rest retreated into the meadows. As we circled around the meadows to make it to Goody Brimm's house, we were ambushed by more toads. Axback was overwhelmed by the swarming masses of the foul monsters, and I wasn't faring much better with my staff. Eventually we were captured and dragged off. We were relieved of our weapons but luckily the toads weren't smart enough to check my cloak. They locked us in a cage and posted two trident-armed guards. I signaled Axback to be quiet so he wouldn't draw any attention as I sawed through the back cage bars. It was about midnight when I finally cut through. As we sneaked through the sleeping toads Axback noticed our weapons lying near the king. I told him to stay as I retrieved our weapons, but his was much too heavy for me to carry; he had to get it himself. The toads apparently overate during dinner, because not a single one stirred while we made our way out. We needed space between us and them, so we followed the safest route that we could find. We travelled throughout the night and made it to Goodwife Brimm's house just after dawn. She warmly greeted us and invited us in. Not so surprisingly we found at last the three missing dibbuns, cheerful as ever and looking well fed, as we explained the reason for our journey. Once she heard we hadn't slept a wink last night, she told us that we could rest as long as we liked in her home. The next morning I awakened to find Axback playing with the little ones, and Goody Brimm making a breakfast of blueberry scones, apple pancakes, and strawberry cordial. We set off after breakfast with provisions that would last five days, including some of her best elderberry wine for the elders back home. We steered as far away from the Watermeadows as possible, as we didn't want to be overwhelmed again by toads. That night Axback mentioned a vermin band we passed on the way to the Watermeadows, hoping that we didn't run into them. Well, we unfortunately did encounter them the very next day. I quickly took the dibbuns and sped them to safety on a large tree branch. I bid them not to move so they would be safe. When I came down, Axback had already slewn three of them, holding the rest at bay with his axe. I whipped out my staff and sabre, and ran around behind them. I leapt on the first unsuspecting rat, covered his mouth, and ran him straight through. Just then Axback rushed them causing them to jump back at the sudden attack. I bashed a few heads with my staff before any others noticed me. Then the fox seemed to jump in front of me; surprised by the sudden speed of the fox, I jumped back about a yard. We locked blades and I was startled as his strength began to overwhelm me. Both he and I looked down at the very moment the tip of a spear emerged from his stomach. THe massive fox staggered forward as I backed up to look at the scene Axback and I had created. I just then remembered the dibbuns, and decided it would be a good idea to carry them as far away from the massacre as possible. In conclusion, we made it back to the Abbey safe and sound. Axback swears up and down we had at least three bottles of Elderberry wine in our gear, but we only made it home with two. I know what happened to that bottle, but I will never tell! |
