Types of Injections

Subcutaneous - needle is inserted just under the skin.
Intramuscular (IM) - needle is inserted into muscle.
Intravenous (IV) - needle is inserted into a vein.
Intranasal (IN) - spray up a nostil

Vaccinate for:

Once yearly:

Botulism - food poisoning
Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) - seasonal disease, fever and diahrea.
Rabies - CNS, touble swollowing.
Strangles - spreads fast, abcess in throat, can be vaccinated IN.
Tetanus - Bacterial infection, effects CNS, stiffness, third eyelid comes down.

1-2 times yearly:

E/W Encephalitis - spread by mosquitoes and ticks

3-4 times yearly:

Influenza - common cold, contagious upper respiratory disease, IN form lasts 6 months
Rhinopneumonitis - upper respiratory disease, cough, fever, nasal discharge.

The vaccinations a horse needs vary depending on location and exposure to horses with unknown vaccination histories.
