Sample Analysis
Here's a sample numerological analysis following the Pythagorean sytem. At the end of Arithmancy I, all students should be able to make such an analysis. This one was handed in as a Lesson 9 assignment by a student, who analyzed the actor James Marsters.
Numerological analysis for James Wesley Marsters
1) first name: 1+1+4+5+1+5+5+1+3+5+7= 38, 3+8 = 11
The 11 is a master number in numerology (well, who would have expected anything
less from James?), a special number that can either be seen as a double 1 (11)
or a two (1+1=2).
The number of the first name represents the creative part of your personality.
People with the number 11 do not like detailed routine work. That may have been
one of the reasons that James was never happy at Julliard, a school of the
performing arts, which is known for its rigorous three-year training.
Number 11 people are known for being very direct, sometimes even to the degree
that they offend people who could otherwise become their companions.
People with the number one are strong individualists. If they have an idea, they
try to realize it alone and without help. On the last day of the filming of the
Buffy episode "Lover's Walk", James convinced Joss Whedon to let him
do the sunburning stunt himself. The result was that James burnt his hand and
was too embarrassed to tell anyone. He did a lot of his stunt scenes himself and
takes great pride in it.
The strong individualism of number one people leads to the fact that they do not
like to be influenced by others in their creative work and won't let others tell
them they are not good enough. James said in an interview that the training at
Julliard made many acting students give up on acting altogether because they
convinced them they were worthless and should go do something else. At one point
he almost jumped from the roof of Julliard because they almost convinced him he
would never be an actor. Almost. Instead he moved to Chicago and started his
professional theatrical career.
Number 1 personalities have an unbreakable optimism, they are talented and
willing to create something; but they have to learn that this is not enough
sometimes, they have to be open to criticism even if it is not always easy.
If you reduce the 11 to a number 2, you can see that there are some typical
number 2 traits that can be traced in James' career as well. People with the
number 2 are extroverts and want to accomplish the extraordinary. They can work
on something dedicatedly without standing in the limelight. While doing
theatrical work in Chicago, James co-founded the New Mercury Theater company,
later they relocated to Seattle in the hope of finding better opportunities. His
early career had nothing to do with glamour. For years they played in the
basements of restaurants and churches, with little success because they
preferred "dangerous plays", experimental work, which usually has
little appeal to a broad audience. Number 2 personalities are fighters and can
manage a crisis because they are convinced of their goals.
2) The number of the last name says something about how people handle their
duties.
4+1+9+1+2+5+9+1=32, 3+2=5
The number 5 means: first the work then the fun. People with this number seem to
live only for their duties. They mostly do much more than they actually have to.
I already mentioned that James insists on doing most of his stunts himself. It
is reported that at the 2002 Shore Leave Sci-Fi convention, he stayed for over 2
hours after he was scheduled to leave to ensure that every single fan who had
waited in line got an autograph, and on several occasions he let people take
photos when the organizers of a convention had not allowed it. After the end of
ANGEL, he had his hair shaven off for charity.
But nevertheless one should not assume that number 5s only live for their work
and are not able to enjoy the sunny side of life. James found it very hard to
endure living in a beach house because of his vampire role, he could never go
out and lie in the sun or take a walk on the beach because he would pick up a
tan, so spending time with friends on the beach is one of his favourite
activities, though he is an admitted night owl.
3) The number of the whole name is 2+5=7.
7 personalities are traditionally the priesthood, clergy or leaders of the
community. This is not meant in a religious sense (as we know of religion today),
but more a spiritual relation. They are considered to have direct connections to
the gods, are often philosophers, thinkers or mystics. Don't know about that one,
but James did play a priest on the series "Northern Exposure" in 1992
and 93. I've only found one quote in which James talks about the supernatural,
so I'll just leave it at that:
I think we are profoundly ignorant of our situation here in the universe and I
think we are in the middle of something far more complex and beautiful than we
realise but we really don’t know exactly what that is.

To say that a 7 is "a little crazy" is a very harmless description for
a 7. He's been described as "a little crazy" by his fellow actors more
than once, and set pictures always look like he's fun to be around.
4) James's soul number, calculated from the vowels in his name, is
A E E E A E
1+5+5+5+1+5=22
The 22 can be seen as a four.
A number 4 is very practical. There is an anecdote that illustrates this side of
James: James was 30 minutes late taking the stage at his Live in Five concert at
The Carling Academy in Islington on April 29, 2005 because one of his guitar
strings broke and he had to mend it with a hairdryer. Loyalty and honesty are
also very important to the number 4. A number 4 can accept when old things come
to an end, but their strong sense of order makes them want some kind of closure.
That may be one of the reasons that James has always said he would like to make
a Spike movie very much, although he has been quite successful without the
Jossverse so far. It has been rumoured he makes 400, 000 dollars per episode of
Smallville.
You can also see the 22 as a double 2. Number 2 people are very interested in
the arts, which is very true for James since he is both an actor and a musician,
but often they have difficulty finding out where they stand, so many of them are
better off with a more defined profession. James decided for the more difficult
road, but his change from theatre to television for more financial security
reflects his number 2 traits.
The Vowel A
The first vowel in his name is an a, so he is audacious (did I mention the
stunts and desert races?), but plans ahead, both in thought and action. He got
another a in his first name, which is a sign he belongs to the sharpest thinkers
and is very precise. He has been known for critical comments on his roles and a
good perception of what a character would do and what not. He was the one who
suggested Spike got his leather coat from a victim, but that was back in Season
2, and Joss rejected the idea ("Spike wouldn't do that!") ---- only to
bring it up again in Season 5's "Fool for Love", when Spike kills the
slayer Nikki on a New York subway train.
5) The number of the person, which is made up from all consonants in the name
J M S W S L Y M R S T R S
1+4+1+5+1+3+7+4+9+1+2+9+1=48, 4+8=12, 1+2=3
The first sentence you read about number 3 people in a numerology book is:
"Your attractiveness lets you stand out in a crowd." Of course
attractivity can be quite subjective, but James did win the Sexiest Male Vampire
Award at the Nocturnal 2K Con in London in July 2000, named #1 of the Top
Sexiest Men on Buffy/Angel by the BTVS magazine in 2004, and won a 2004 poll by
the Royal Shakespeare Company of Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford in England
asking movie viewers to vote for the actor they'd love to see as Romeo,
triumphing over the usual teenage heartthrobs such as Orlando Bloom, Ewan
McGregor, Jude Law and Johnny Depp.
Number 3 people draw others to them naturally, and they need company and
conversation. However, being too extrovert can change them into narcists. James
probably knows about that weakness, he avoids going on the internet and visiting
Spike-centred sites - such as mine ;-) - because he's afraid they might flatter
his ego too much. You needa quote to prove my theory? Here it is:
" Celebrity is toxic to the soul. "
Because of these traits, a number 3 can wear anything. At his guest appearance
as the Nietzschean Archduke Charlemagne Bolivar on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda,
however, James had great reservations about the costumes they asked him to wear,
as he felt it made the character less masculine than he would have liked.
Probably what added to the feeling of discomfort was that James, 5 foot 11, had
to wear heavy boots in order not to be dwarfed by Kevin Sorbo, 6 foot 3, and
Keith Hamilton Cobb, 6 foot 4.
The leather coat became the trademark of James' TV character Spike, yet there
were several memorable fashion statements on the show, e.g. blue shirt and
tousled hair as "the madman in the school basement" in Season 7, suit
and shy intellectual glasses in the William flashbacks, or the punk outfit in
the 1970s flashbacks; let's not forget about the hilarious Hawaii shirt Spike
borrows from Xander in Season 4 - a number 3 can wear anything? Well, at least
almost anything... or nothing at all. One of his first major theater roles was a
Chicago production of 'The Tempest' in which he was strapped near-naked to a
large wooden wheel for his entrance. He claims that he has never been
self-conscious about appearing nude since.
James was born on August 20th, 1962
6) birthday: 20
People born on a 20th are emotional and need a home and a family, which is very
important to them. James's marriage failed, which he never talks about, and for
a long time he even kept the fact that he has been married and has a son a
secret because he wanted to avoid his family being bothered by his Buffy fame.
He describes family and close friends as the most important thing in his life:
" Well you have to build a life that is separated from the whole Hollywood
thing and surround yourself with people who are willing to tell you when you are
being a jerk."
http://www.phase9.tv/moviefeatures/ange
A birthday on the 20th also indicates a musical talent. James has been on the
band "Ghost of the Robot" and after they split up started a second
career and produced his solo album "Civilized Man", which he promoted
on a sold-out tour.
7) destiny/life lesson: 1
2+0+0+8+1++9+6+2=28, 2+8=10, 1+0=1
Associated with the sun, the 1 has a pioneer spirit, originality and creativity.
A person with the destiny number 1 can be stubborn and dictatorial because they
don't like to obey orders. James had a big argument with Joss Whedon about the
episode "Seeing Red" in Season 6 because he was convinced that Spike
would never attack and try to rape Buffy the way the episode was written, at
first he refused to do the scene at all. What arguments Joss used to convince
him hasn't been reported, but it probably wasn't easy. A number 1 likes to be
his own boss and decides what he does and what not. In fact, James has had lots
of role offers after ANGEL ended, but he turned most of them down and quarrelled
endlessly with his agents because he did not want to play only vampires and drug
addicts, which was the kind of role offered most often. A number 1 is
independent and creative. 1 personalities are mostly attractive, tend to be slim
and harmonize with the color gold (aren't vampires' eyes golden on Buffy?)
James harmonizes best with a two, and second-best with numbers 3,4,6 and 7.
Strangely enough,
SMG, with whom he entertains a good friendship, 14.04.1977 is a 6, which
harmonizes well with the 1. Being asked what it was like to kiss Sarah, James
replied: " If I answer that question, Sarah's husband would hit me with a
bat, and I wouldn't blame him."
Film partner Juliet Landau, however, 20.03.1965, is a 9, which doesn't seem to
harmonize at all with James, a fate she shares with myself. On the other hand,
if what the two of them displayed on screen is bad chemistry, well, I guess I
could live with that ... and all those actors are lying about their birth years
anyway ;-)
8) Life lesson number
date of birth and full name
28 + 38 + 32 = 98, 9+8=17, 1+7=8
According to that number, James's life goal is expansion, power and glory. Given
the interviews I've read, it is a safe bet to say that James would probably
object to that. But the childhood dream many boys have, the dream of being a
superhero, seems to be attractive to him still, if only on a subconscious level;
he did voiceovers for the Spiderman animated series (not as Spiderman,
regrettably) and is currently appearing as Brainiac on Smallville. James's
favourite drama is Shakespeare's Macbeth, a play that is about ambition, power
and glory. One of his ambitions yet to be fulfilled is to play Macbeth in a new
adaptation for the big screen, similar to the legendary adaptation by Roman
Polanski. His desires will be stilled only through discipline and perseverance.
Advising and leading people can be a good opportunity for a number 8. Maybe one
day James will teach acting? Who knows?
