The Quotable Quatermain

Sometimes one of the characters actually tosses off a line that I particularly like, or that one of my friends particularly likes. For my own amusement, and for quick reference purposes, I compiled this list of favorite quotes from the series. If you have a favorite you'd like to see on here, let me know!

Favorite Elizabeth Lines

Admittedly, most of Elizabeth's best lines aren't spoken, but are rather part of her internal dialogue. Now and then, however, she comes out with a gem.

"You always are there when I need you, Rodney, even if I don't know that I need you." (Volume III)

"What am I to do with this?" (Volume III -- after catching Mina's bridal bouquet)

"It's not hard to have faith in someone who's never let you down." (Volume IV)

I have a family. They are at the Singers hotel, and probably wondering why I have not returned, as it is starting to grow dark." (Volume IV -- in response to Ben Everett asking if she wanted a family of her own)

"I've always been a sparrow in a world full of peacocks." (Volume IV)

Favorite Skinner Lines

"At least Tom's a normal chap! Well, except for being an American, of course." (Volume I)

"Everyone will talk about us being alone in a closet, and Ill be forced to confess my undying love for you in front of the entire crew in order to save your reputation." (Volume I)

"Good one, Tom. I was about to take advantage of the romantic setting to ask Bess to marry me, and now youve spoiled the mood." (Volume II)

"You know, Bess, if you dont stop getting yourself into trouble like that, Im gonna start charging for these little mishaps." (Volume II)

"Let's face it, you are prettier." (Volume II -- to Tom, when explaining that the Egyptian vampire is after him instead of Carter)

"The day you run off with the captain is probably the day he lets me pilot the sub." (Volume II)

"Ive often dreamed of women ordering me to get out of my clothes, but never like this." (Volume III)

"Can you feel the love in this room?" (Volume III)

"You should know by now that I dont let you too far out of my sight, Bess. Its not easy being your invisible shield when you go wandering off on your own." (Volume III)

Sorry, mate, but the lady is with me. (Volume IV)

"I'll kill the bastard." (Volume IV -- regarding Everett)

"I like sparrows." (Volume IV)

Favorite Tom Lines

"As we say in America, the cavalry has arrived!" (Volume I)

"She just turned me to jelly." (Volume II -- regarding Kiya)

"We need more girls on this ship." (Volume III)

"Is it me, or does it seem like our lives are getting progressively weirder?" (Volume III)

Youre very pretty tonight, lil sis. Try not to break too many hearts, okay? (Volume IV)

"Used to be I couldn't trip over one of you without crashing into the other." (Volume IV -- to Elizabeth, about herself and Skinner)

Favorite Mina Lines

"How comforting." (Volume I -- in response to Skinner's tongue-in-cheek reassurance that there will never be anyone for him but Mina)

"There is evil here, a terrible and dangerous evil that could consume all of you. (Volume II)

"I certainly hope and expect to see far more of Jekyll than of Hyde, but do you think it would be fair for me to neglect one side of the man, simply because it is the less desirable aspect?" (Volume III -- on why she wanted a wedding gift for Hyde as well as Henry)

"There are no words to describe the suffering." (Volume IV -- in response to Skinner's query as to whether she missed him)

Favorite Henry Lines

"Skinner becomes visible, and suddenly hes an ordinary man again. His invisibility is both a blessing and a curse, and if he gives it up, hes giving up a huge part of his identity." (Volume III)

"Im thankful to be among people who accept me for what I am, and who can even love me for who I am." (Volume III)

Favorite Nemo Lines

"Each of us leads in his or her own fashion, when we are called on to do so, and no one is expected to go farther than he or she will with the League." (Volume I)

"Let us not suffer this being to live another night." (Volume II)

"If Elizabeth has accepted the proposal, then I shall of course not be of the mind to stop you. She is as a daughter to me, but she is in control of her own destiny." (Volume IV)

"We each have pain which dwells inside us. I ease mine through what we do today." ('While She Was Sleeping')

Favorite Miscellaneous Character Lines

"Mademoiselle Quatermain, daughter of the great white hunter, the pride of Englands heart. Mademoiselle Quatermain, who will die tonight like a common whore in the street." (Sebastian de Gaulle, Volume I)

"Keep still your tongue, or I shall suffer you to witness the death of what you hold most dear." (Kiya to Skinner, Volume II)

"It must be a difficult sort of life, dont you think? After all, if anything goes amiss around him, hes bound to be blamed for it. Think of all the crimes for which he could be framed -- burglaries, even murders." (Ben Everett regarding Skinner, Volume IV)

"Get out of it, Sawyer, and take your monkey with you." (One of Everett's henchmen, Volume IV)

"This isn't a fairy tale, Mr. Skinner. The princess isn't going to kiss you and turn you into a prince." (Ben Everett, 'Skinner's Story')
