The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and Elizabeth)
If you've seen the LXG movie, then you already have a pretty good idea of who these people are (except for Elizabeth). I set up this page to show details about their individual roles in the TPDoEQ universe; I've tried very hard to keep the League members true to their movie personalities, but naturally, they had to be altered at least a little bit to make room for the new person I inserted into their lives. Some got altered a bit more than others. I included Elizabeth on this page, instead of on the original character page, because she's the main character and that makes her semi-canonical; I also wanted to clear up any questions about her relationships with the various League members.
The term "canon," for the uninitiated, means anything referring to the original work. In this case, the canon is the movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Information about the canon characters is derived from a number of sources, including the official movie website, various official film memorabilia, and the novels from which the characters originated. Captain Nemo
The Scientist
According to legend, he was a prince who turned scientist-pirate when his country was overrun and his family massacred. His submarine, Nautilus: Sword of the Ocean, is a technological wonder with absolutely no comparison in 1899 (and it would still rock pretty hard today). He originally joined the League in exchange for a promise of amnesty for his various seafaring crimes. Despite their obvious differences, he and English hunter Allan Quatermain developed a mutual respect and friendship. After Allan's death, another British colonist in Kenya made a passing reference to Elizabeth; it was in this way that Nemo first learned of the existence of Allan's daughter. A sense of duty to his friend's memory prompted him to sail with the League for England to pay his respects to the last Quatermain, at which time he discovered the unfortunate situation thrust upon her by her father's death. Feeling an affinity with this English girl who, like himself, was all that remained of her family, he insisted she join the League aboard the Nautilus. His own children dead, Nemo regards Elizabeth as a sort of foster daughter, and takes curious pleasure in providing for her needs. Theirs is a very respectful and courtesy-based relationship, marked by understated affection.
Wilhelmina (Murray) Harker
The Vampire
Once she was an assistant schoolteacher. Then she married prosperous bank clerk Jonathan Harker. But when the dark shadow of Dracula fell across London, the meek and mild young woman was roused to fight the evil with her husband and Dr. Abraham van Helsing. They triumphed over their adversary, but not before he had a taste of Mina's blood, and she of his. Not quite a full vampire (so they say), she nevertheless retains several vampiric traits, and was persuaded to join the League because M promised her a cure for her unique condition; in addition to her useful physical skills, she is an eminent chemist. As the only woman in the League, the beautiful Mina enjoyed quite a bit of attention from her colleagues, most notably Tom Sawyer, Henry Jekyll, and the late Dorian Gray, her former lover. It was with Henry that she developed a strong bond, resulting in their engagement late in 1899 and a Christmas Eve wedding aboard the Nautilus. She and Elizabeth initially weren't sure what to make of each other, but gradually relaxed into a (slightly wary) friendship, which included Mina asking Elizabeth to stand as bridesmaid.
Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde
The Beast
Mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll believed that all men have two sides to them, one good and one evil. In a well-intentioned attempt to separate the two and rid himself of his own evil side, he developed a formula which resulted in the birth of his alter ego, the vicious Mr. Hyde. In Jekyll's own words, Hyde has committed every atrocity imaginable, "and my curse is that I can recall his actions." To escape justice in London, he faked his own death and fled to Paris, where Hyde spent some time terrorizing residents in the Rue Morgue. He was finally captured by Allan Quatermain, and promised amnesty for his crimes in exchange for joining the League. When M's duplicity was revealed, and explosions threatened to sink the Nautilus, the two sides of the man joined forces to save the day. They are now unified by, among other things, their mutual adoration of Mina Harker; Henry and Nemo share a strong friendship as well, and Nemo was asked to be Henry's best man. Elizabeth likes Henry, whom she considers sweet, and has grown well enough used to Hyde to refer to him as "Edward."
Tom Sawyer
The Spy
Growing up on the shore of the Mississippi, young Tom Sawyer had an insatiable appetite for adventure and trouble. With his best friend Huck Finn, he got into all sorts of mischief. As a young adult, he solved a baffling murder mystery and went on to become a police officer, then an agent with the United States Secret Service. Huck Finn became an agent as well, but was murdered by Moriarty; when Tom took the body back to Missouri for burial, he discovered that his childhood sweetheart, Becky, had married someone else. Distraught over his myriad losses, Tom left for London to join the League and investigate Huck's death. In the short time they spent together, he and Allan Quatermain developed something of a father-son bond, which left the young man even further devastated when Moriarty killed Quatermain too. After Elizabeth joined the troupe, the two young people formed an attachment; although Elizabeth was initially attracted to the good-looking agent, their relationship grew into something much more like family. Elizabeth calls him her "almost-brother," because he was the surrogate son of her father, and he has taken to calling her "li'l sis." He surprises her on occasion with how well he really knows her.
Rodney Skinner
The Rogue
He refers to himself as a "gentleman thief." Widely considered the most lovable character in all of LXG, Skinner is incorrigible, playful, and startlingly noble when the occasion calls for it. After the death of the original invisible man, Hawley Griffin, Skinner stole his formula and prepared himself for a life of larceny -- little dreaming how depressing invisibility was going to be. M lured him into joining the League, like Mina, with a promise of a cure. When it first became apparent that there was a traitor in their midst, most of his colleagues suspected him -- how does one trust an invisible thief? Fortunately for them, he not only was a far more loyal son of the British empire than they believed, but he was more of a hero than they could have guessed. He stowed away aboard the Nautiloid with the real villains in order to lead the League to the Mongolian stronghold, then volunteered to plant strategically-placed bombs in the furnace "to blow that place to hell." He also saved Sawyer from a flamethrower-wielding robot, getting himself badly burned in the process. In Elizabeth, Skinner initially saw a total innocent who needed protecting, and he became her "invisible shield" to atone for some of his own less-than-honorable past deeds. He is her best friend; he calls her Bess (or Bessie), an endearment only he is allowed to use, and she likewise is the only one permitted to address him by his first name. As time goes on, the relationship continues to grow stronger, but neither one is sure where it's going. One thing is certain, however, as we have seen on a number of occasions -- nobody messes with Elizabeth if Skinner's around.
Elizabeth Quatermain
The Historian
Missee Sahib Quatermain to Nemo's men, Elizabeth to the League members, and Bess to just one person, she is the daughter of the legendary Allan Quatermain and his second wife. Raised by her mother's sister, she records much of the League's exploits and travels in her personal diary, thus earning her the tag of 'historian.' She is also knowledgeable about the medicinal and domestic uses of various herbs, and has a small herbarium in her quarters aboard the Nautilus. All of twenty years old, she is petite, with brown hair and grey eyes, and could best be described as "wholesomely pretty." She's your typical girl-next-door. She was initially awed by the unusual companions who took her in, but over time has grown accustomed to and very fond of them. The odd circumstances of her youth meant that she never really had a family, so the League fills that void in her life. Nemo is her unofficial guardian; Henry and Mina, her teachers and friends; Tom, her brotherly confidante; Skinner, her dearest friend and devoted companion, who never hesitates to get between her and any threat. For the most part she loves her life aboard the Nautilus, but it hasn't come without a price. She continues to be haunted by her experiences in the Paris warehouse, and the first (and hopefully last) time she was forced to take someone else's life.
