Let me introduce myself. My name is Nancy, or mom when it comes to Brandy and Murphy. I live in Tenn-essee, home of the Great Smokey Mountains. I am a Domestic Engineer (known by most as a housewife). I was born in Miami, Florida , but have lived most of my life in the beautiful state of Tennessee. This web site is dedicated to the remembrance of my first Shih Tzu, Mikey. He was born April 5, passed away September 7, 2002. Mikey was only 5 months old when he lost his life to parvo. I loved him very much, and I do not wish for anyone to go through the heartache that I have had to endure. Due to a hectic summer I put off having Mikey's vaccinations updated. I wish to urge others to be sure and get shots for your beloved pets. Don't wait as I did, and take a chance with your pet. Take them to your favorite vet. No matter the kind of pet you have, and no matter how busy your life may seem. A 15 minute visit could mean an animal's life. Especially one you love. (This Web-site started Nov. 2002

History and Origin of the Shih Tzu (Articles are taken from various sources of information.)
Based on their presence in various Chinese paintings and tapestries, it is thought that the Shih Tzu has been in existence since 624 AD. Despite many theories about the origin of the breed, it is not disputed that the Shih Tzu was part of the ancient Chinese court. The dogs were bred and selected with great care. From this foundation, along with the help of Russian refugee Madame de Breuil, the dogs of today were developed. In the 1930's the interest in the breed had spread to England. During World War II, U.S. military personnel stationed in England fell in love with the breed. When returning home, the Shih Tzu accom-panied them, thus introducing the breed to the United States.
The Shih Tzu are a small sturdy dog with a big heart. Their name, Shih Tzu, has the meaning of "lion". They, being an ancient breed, are a very popular family pet. The breed is an excellent choice for families with children, or for the elderly. Recognized as part of the toy group by the AKC in 1969, racked up a number of honors recently. The breed won the Eukanuba Tournament of Champions in October 2001, and was one of the top 10 breeds for that year. They have a short nose and slightly pushed in face. The hair coat is naturally long and dense and requires daily care. The hair of the face is typically tied on top of the head as a top-knot. To reduce the need for daily brush-ing, some people have the coats trimm-

ed in a short terrier-like trim. Shih Tzus can be any color or combination of colors. Standing only 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder and weighing 9 to 16 pounds when grown, the Shih Tzu is a small but tough little dog. They are bred to be a pet and nothing else. The breed is strong and sturdy, the least delicate of the toy breeds. They have the appearance of being proud and arrogant but are actually gentle and very playful. Being a friendly dog, they will adapt to any family situation but are definitely an indoor dog. They can easily withstand the rough treatment, and even the occasional dress-up of children and make excellent children's companions. This breed is also loyal, and gentle enough to be a great choice companion for the elderly. Basic obedience is recommended to help develope a content and pleasant member of the family. The Shih Tzu are not typically trained for specific jobs and does best as just a loving pet.
The following are some special con-cerns and health concerns. With a long hair coat, they need grooming to prevent mats. Cataracts cause a loss of the normal transparency of the lens of the eye. The problem can occur in one or both eyes and can lead to blindness. Atopy is a disease associated with allergies. Urolithiasis is a urinary tract disorder characterized by the develop-ment of bladder stones. Corneal ulcers are common in the Shih Tzu due to the protrusion of the eyes. Intervertebral Disk Disease is a disorder that affects the spinal disks resulting in pain, diffi-culty walking and possibly paralysis. Kid-ney disease associated with a lack of development of the kidney has been found to be inherited in the Shih Tzu. The life span of the Shih Tzu is expected to be 14 to 16 years. You should realize that each dog is unique and may display other charac-teristics. This profile provides generally accepted breed information only. (This Web Site will be updated monthly.)

Shih Tzu's and More (May 2004 up-date)
My goodness how time has passed by since I first started this web-site. It will soon be two years since Mikey passed away and a lot has happened since then. My little furbees (that's what I call them with a whole lot of affection) are of course grown, but still just as cute and loveable. We found out that Murphy was born with gluacoma. This is common for Shih Tzu when they are much older. I won't breed him now because this condition will be passed on to any of his puppies. He has also started having seizures and is on medication to help control them. Brandy is healthy and doing great. She has become a real prima-donna, just like a spoiled princess. With her green eyes and poochie lip how could you not spoil her.
