"Shaslan!!" she cried, jumping up. "Shaslan?" you asked, confused. "Oh, I forgot," she said, blushing, "it means greetings in Rian. Nice to meet you, traveller. I am Jessaline, guardien of the Devi hatchling now." "Oh! Hullo," you say. Jessaline smiled and sat back down. "If you have time, I can tell you my story," she said. "Sure, I have time," you said. 'What the heck? I have no where to go right now' you thought silently to yourself. "Then sit traveller, there us much to tell," she said and gathered the tiny hatchling in her arms. It all stared two months ago.... was it really that early? Anyway that was about the time we started having money problems in my family. Oh, my father was a VERY sucessful stock dealer. But one day he lost all of it. Gambling, my mother had told me. My mother and snorted and the very next day she had grabbed me and left. My father was standing at the doorway, shouted and yelling, but my mom had payed no attention. We travelled for 2 weeks, through rain and shine. Sometimes we got rides with kind travellers. One evening my mother fell sick. Pneumonia, I suspect it was. With no doctors though, my mom soon took her last breath. Her last words to me were 'Never give up. The more you try, the more you achieve.' Well, I could never go back to my father. Who knows where he could be by now. I had no choice but to go on. The next few days were horrible. I had an aching feeling in my heart. I missed my mom terribly. Well, I soon came across a desert. It was hot. Unbearably hot. I fainted quickly and I hadn't awaken for a day.
I awoke to strange noises. Hooves and the shouts. I sat up, startled of where I was. I quickly layed down again, for quick movements made me dizzy and quesy. "Ahh, traveller, you have awaken," said a soft voice. I turned around. A short woman was there. She was slim and had wild deep black hair. It hung to her waist and was tied in a blood red ribbon. She smiled gently and helped you sit up. "I am Kichi Slamsa," she said smiling and raising a cup of cool water to my lips. I drank gratefully. The water help settle some of the dizziness and sickness I was feeling. "Kichi Slamsa? What kind of name is that?" I asked. "A very good name. A unique one," she had snorted and threw her head back in a snobby gesture, "what shall your name be, your better-name-than-mine highness?" "My name's Jessaline Larkas," I told her, grinning. "Jessaline? Your name should be Slannilsa," she said, grinning, her bracelets jangling. "Slannilsa? What does that mean?" I asked, curiously. "Snobby Queen!" Kichi cracked up and I looked shock for a spilt second. "Hah, hah, very funny," you said lamely. "Lighten up! Anyway, you need your sleep!" she said, catching her breath. Kichi made me lay back down and go to sleep. I dozed off and soon I woke up again. I felt much better and the smell of food made me get up. I walked outside. I was in the coolness of the forest. How strange. I followed the smoke and found Kichi and a young man there. Kichi looked up and me and smiled. "Jessa! Come eat!" she called and waved me over. "Jessa, meet Yalaka, the one who found you back in the desert," Kichi said. "Hullo Yalaka. First Kichi and now Yalaka? You guys have strange names," I said, teasingly. "I see I picked up a mocking one," he said, cocking an eyebrow, "most people will be happy that I saved their lives." "Oh Yalaka. You don't appriciate us funny ones," Kichi said and swatted at him with a napkin. "Okay okay! I appriciate!" Yalaka said through laughter. "Humph! That's better!" Kichi said, smiling. Kichi picked up a plate with rice on it and handed it to me. "Eat now, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow," she said.
Over the next few weeks, Kichi and Yalaka were very good to me. But, one day, something terrible happened. On a hot day, Yalaka, Kichi and I headed out. The midnight black horses, which we were riding, were beaded with sweat by dinner time. Kichi went off into the woodlands to find some wood to make a fire, while Yalaka calmed and cooled the horses down. Kichi was taking a long time, so I went after her. I picked my way around the fallen logs and I arrived at a small hidden clearing. I walked in there, hoping to find Kichi. Kichi was in there alright, but surrounded by large wolves. Growling, circling her. When I burst into the clearing, they all turned to me. Kichi did too. She gasped and ran in front of me. I trembled in fright. "Move aside, water dragon, the girl will do fine," one wolf hissed angrily. "Water dragon?" I asked meekly. Kichi turned to me. She eyed me wearily. "I guess it's about time you found out huh? Well, I am a water dragon, as you already found out. My type of water dragon is rare, for I can morph into human form. I decided to do that, and I met Yalaka. I've never morphed back, once," Kichi sighed. "Water dragon, move aside and we will make the kill. We do not need trouble from your kind," another wolf growled. Kichi looked around, sighing. She slowly stepped aside, but you notice the determined look in her eyes. The wolves haven't notice and the pack's leader stepped out to make the kill. The leader was huge. It looked at me with gleaming black eyes. It lunged and I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the wide snapping jaws to lock around my neck. But nothing came. Instead, silence. You look up and saw Kichi there, in her dragon form, still with blood flowing out of her. I gave a weak whimper. The wolves looked shock and ran as quickly as they could from the clearing. I stared at the still form of Kichi, then I ran back to Yalaka. But Yalaka wasn't there. Nobody was there except one frightened black horse. Fearfully, I looked around for Yalaka and the other horse, but they were no where to be found. I whimpered and climbed upon the horse's back and speed off into the night. For the remaining days, I rode. There were little to eat and we soon became starved. One night I was sitting by a creek, and I caught sight of a blushish glint. Picking it up, I saw it was an egg. It glowed and I took it with me.... |
