"righteous."
-ani, my bloody valentine, smashing pumpkins, hole, beth orton, dido if she weren't a wuss, elizabeth wurtzel, paglia, many random writers, anne lamott, simon reynolds, kate millett. but you knew those already.
-my FRIENDS. all three of you. you know who you are, and YOU KICK ASS.
"cheap. funky. new."
-nordstrom rack. YEAH. the world's coolest shoes. where i bought my only white shirt.
-discount racks of designer stores. look great, spend little. it's all good.
-a hippie shop in a town in southeast cape cod called the dead zone but i doubt that's their website... got some great dresses and that infamous blue renaissance shirt that keeps coming unlaced on me.
-anything from san francisco.
-steve madden for boots neither i nor you can afford, upper west side for funky, dirt cheap shoes, and nine west if i want to splurge. there's a great place back in baltimore - dsw shoe factory - where you can get designer shoes for next to nothing. and can't beat easy spirit for comfort. i'm not even bothering to admit where my combat boots are from.
-jones new york. can't be beat if you want to stay warm. check out burlington coat factory if you like my indiana jones hat.
-the discount rack at hot topic used to have some decent stuff, but now it's a cross between limp bizkit and jiggin' gear. retch.
-victoria's secret. great bath stuff that doesn't reek like those fruit sprays everyone is using.
-believe it or not, my suits are from sears because nowhere else makes any that are small enough and don't make me look forty. there's some nice stuff at lerner new york, but it's a bit ghettofied and i don't want to look like j.lo or any of that shit. i'm such a dork, i get my jeans at jcpenney. what? what? they fit!
"like makeup is a sign of my declining mind..."
-hard candy's "porno." for when i bother with my nails.
-lipstick: champagne frost, and dark purple by bonne bell. mix dark brown lipstick with nat robbins' radiant red lipliner if i'm going out at night.
-dark brown eye pencil with a touch of red, i like revlon, they also make good lipstick if you want to pay too much. eyeshadow - purple, light brown, gold sparkle, and white - but not all at the same time. any brand will do.
-blush - peach or crimson sebastian. there's a wonderful brownblack mascara out somewhere that doesn't smudge when i cry.
"they always pay for lunch"
-random funky dives across the east coast. good memories, cheap food.
-gandalf's in frostburg, md. i recommend the pita chips and hummus.
-john harvard's in wayne, pa and cambridge, ma. homemade cream soda and blue corn chip nachos.
-charley's (r.i.p) in king of prussia. excellent potato soup and fettucine alfredo.
-anything mexican. most italian stuff without tomatoes. philly cheese steaks. brew houses.
-the gryphon in wayne, pa. expensive drinks in a borgeois bohemian environment, but it's good to stay warm.
-mcdonalds in massachusetts for a laugh - what the fuck's a lobster roll?
"you told me your music could make millions..."
-the sound garden in baltimore. the ONLY place to go.
-south street in philly just because i haven't been anywhere else.
-the entire area around berklee in boston. okay, boston itself. i regret not going there sometimes.
"kick it!"
-the 9:30 in DC. beth orton AND the smashing pumpkins. sometimes d.c. surprises me - constitution hall?
-roseland ballroom, nyc. the astoria, london. i WILL play there.
equip
-fender musicmaster bass. you can't get these suckers anymore, kids. try squier's short-scale if you want a copy of it, or get a hybrid. my favorite finish is cherry wine if you're looking at American Standard, but to get what i need to go to the custom shop.
-ovation acoustics. one of the few brands that are made small enough for my hands, plus you can tune them way down and still get a thick, low sound. my dream is either a blue sunburst ovation (i own a brown sunburst) or that $3k taylor that i played once.
-electrics are a different story. i like the small necks on yamaha electric. eventually i would like to own some form of a gibson 335 for the sound, the body doesn't suit my style of playing.
