"History of the DUGGER Surname"

The surname DUGGER is not that common, but there are hundreds of thousands of us out there. There are not any concrete records of our surname's origin though. Most genealogists can only trace the "DUGGER" surname back to the late 1600's to early 1700's.

The general consenus of most genealogists doing research on the DUGGER surname is that DUGGER is of Scots, English, or Scots/Irish origin. The first agreed upon recorded American variation was "Duggar", "Dugar", and "Dugard". In addition, "Dugar" has been recorded in England as early as 1675, and in Ireland in 1681. The names "Dewgar" (1588), "Duggor" (1726), "Dewgher" (1729), "Deugher" (1730) are also recorded in England, according to the Morman Family Search IGS . In Dublin, Ireland, a Hannah DUGGAR was christened 23 Oct 1681; Her father was Daniel DUGGAR (Also referenced from the Morman Family Search IGS).

Our DUGGER surname might also have German origins and might be a shortened version of "Duggert". DUGGER has been documented as meaning: ... descendant of Duggert. Further yet, Duggert is a variation of "Tuchard", which in German translates to worth or hard. Other German variations of Duggert are: "Duge", "Dugge", "Dugs".

The DUGGER surname quite possibly could be a French variation of Daguerre (like Daguerretype pictures). It also is not inconceiveable that this surname could once have been du Gard (which in French means: ... of the guard or soldiers). another translation of the Dugard name (from Norman French): "Dieu (te) garde" - God Guard (you).

Keep in mind that our DUGGER surname has had a very long and established foothold in United States, and has been diluted with many other nationalities. Also, different family groups have come over at various times. In my humble opinion our surname originated in England or Ireland, and was then eventually "Americanized" to DUGGER (as we know it) in the colonies..

Many of us are proud to claim, Irish, Scottish, English, Cherokee, or German roots, and that is fine.....But as a reality check; Spanish, French, African, Mexican, Italian, and numerous other ethnic groups are in our lineage now too. Despite what the DUGGER surname ethnic origins might have been, we are all in a big "melting pot" over here now, and just plain old Americans!
