Dionaea muscipula is the latin name for Venus' Flytrap. This bizzare plant is one of the first that comes to mind when one thinks of insect eating plants. Flytraps are easy to grow once given the proper conditions. They grow fine outdoors in Los Angeles when planted in 50:50 peat:sand and watered with rain or distilled water. Keep soil wet during the growing season. Flytraps will go dormant during the winter season. Flytraps are native to North and South Carolina, U.S.A. and grow in very sandy soil much like that mentioned above. Flytraps can be hand fed flies, but if you grow them outdoors, they do a good job catching food on their own. Edward Read 2003 |
