The history of the chihuahua
has many beliefs, much of it coming from folk tales and legends.
No one is 100% sure how or when they arrived in the United States.
Many people believe they originated
in Mexico, where others believe they were started in Egypt, traveling through
the Mediterranean countries. There are some that believe that their
origination began in China, some people even believe they were brought
to the United States by the Spaniards, and that they were the first to
breed the Chihuahua.
Even yet today it is hard to
know what is fact or fiction as many languages do not translate well into
English.
It is speculated that the Aztecs
who conquered the Toltecs, were very fond of the little dog we call Chihuahua.
Ancient remains, show that the small dogs were buried with their masters.
It is believed that the Aztecs used the little dogs in religious ceremonies,
they believed that the little dogs spirit would take away the bad spirits
of their masters allowing their spirit safe passage to the spirit world.
At one time the Chihuahua nearly
became extinct as they were used as meat to feed the people.
It is believed that in the 1800's
that American travelers to Mexico, began to bring the dogs back, then began
an all out breeding program, at that time they were known as Arizona dogs,
Mexican dogs, and the Texas dogs. Many of the first breeding dogs
were gotten in the state of Chihuahua, and these dog types varied a lot,
in size, conformation, coat type, and color. The one characteristic
that they all had was the soft spot in the top of their heads, this is
known as the molera.
The American Kennel Club lists
the first Chihuahua as being shown in 2890, and listed the first Chihuahua
in its stud book in 1904.
Many people believe that the
Chihuahua has great healing powers, some have been used like hot water
bottles to help cure stomach aches, and other illnesses. It is even
believed that the Chihuahua can help cure asthma. No medical proof
has been produced to back this belief, but sometimes just believing in
something can help with some one getting well, faster.
Chihuahuas can be used as hearing
dogs for the deaf, as well as therapy dogs for the elderly. The small
chihuahua has been used as drug sniffing dogs, as their small size lets
them get into small places that other, larger drug sniffing dogs can't
get into, and some Chihuahuas have even been used as tracking dogs.
The chihuahua is a highly energetic dog that runs around and thinks that
they are as ferocious as the biggest dog around.
What you pick, can vary from
dog to dog, as well as breeder to breeder. If, you are purchasing
a puppy for a pet it is best to have them spay or neutered, in doing this
it helps to keep down unwanted pregnancies and helps keep down the number
of dogs going to shelters, and it also helps with males to keep them from
being so territorial and are not as inclined to wonder from home.
Spaying and neutering of dogs tend to let them live longer, healthier lives.
Chihuahuas that are bought for
the purpose of showing or breeding, must remain completely intact, as AKC
rules say they may not be altered to be used in the show ring. Selecting
a chihuahua for show or breeding can be difficult at a very early age as
many will get taller in leg or longer in body than is acceptable for showing.
Therefore, it is suggested that they be gotten after six (6) months of
age when they have reached the majority of their growth.
The ideal chihuahua, will have
an apple head with lean cheeks and jaws, the ears are large and held erect
when alert and may flare to the side at a 45 degree angle when positioned
for repose. The back need to make a straight line with the length
of body being slightly longer than they are tall. When looking at
them they need to appear as if they were in the shape of a box. The
ideal weight is any where from one (1) to six (6) pounds. Chihuahuas
have two (2) recognized coat types, which are the smooth coat and the long
hair coat. Smooth coats should be a close glossy coat with a very
soft texture, and the long hair coat should be a flat or slightly curly,
softtextured coat with a preferred undercoat. They may range in any
number of colors such as a solid color, a marked color, or even a splashed
color in both coat types.
