Excerpts taken from the Brooke History: Nathaniel and Elizabeth Foote came to
New England at a very early date. The 1st record of him is at Watertown, MA
where his name is mentioned in the "Records of the Colony of Mass.," May,
1633, when he took the "Oath of Freeman". On 21 Sep 1608/09 he apprenticed
himself for 8 years to Samuel Croyeye, a Colchester grocer. Nathaniel was a
grocer himself, as of 18 Oct 1619, when he bought a messuage from Beatrice
Barker, Esq., located on East Street, St. James Parish, Colchester. In 1630
the family was living in St. Mary Bothaw Parish, from whence they immigrated
to New England on board the FORTUNE. They were in Watertown, MA by 03 Sep
1633, when Nathaniel took the freeman's oath and owned a homestead of 16 acres
with a 2 acre salt marsh... in 1635 the family removed to Wethersfield, CT
where Nathaniel was one of the ten "adventurers" who bought the land directly
from the Wongunk Indians, an area located along the CT River known as Pyguaq,
later named Wethersfield. Early Wethersfield had only one street, Broad
Street, later called Front Street...Nathaniel was primarily a farmer, but also
served as Deputy to the General Court 1641-44.
