Taken from the Newcomb Genealogy: Deacon John Newcomb removed to Lebanon,
Conn., where he was admitted to the First Church, 20 Mar 1715, and his wife
was received into the church 8 June 1718. They settled in the northern part of
the town, called the "Crank," "Second Society," or "North Society," which in
1804 was set off from Lebanon as a town under the name of Columbia. Upon the
organization of the Second Society, in 1718, he joined it and became first
deacon, an office which he held forty-two years, or until his removal to
Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, in 1760. The date on which he took the "Freeman's
Oath" in Lebanon is not recorded; he was elected surveyor of highways in 1725
and selectman in 1744. He made several purchases and sales of land in Lebanon.
On 29 Jan 1716/17, he bought from Thomas Root 69 acres in the third division;
consideration 20 pounds. In 1729 he received from his father 20 acres in
Lebanon, consideration "love, respect and goodwill that I bear to my son John
Newcomb." His name is mentioned many times in the church records. In 1738 he
was chosen as "one of the most judicious, prudent and skillful of the brethren
of the church to assist in the management of all affairs in church
government." in 1741 he was on a committee with Deacon Eliakim Tupper to
manage the prudentials of the parish. From the Society Rate Bill, containing
one hundred and fifty-four names, made out by them that year for "defraying
the necessary charges in ye North Parish in Lebanon," 330 pounds 16 shillings
9 pence, it appears that Deacon John Newcomb paid the highest tax but one in
the parish, this tax being 5 pounds 11 shillings 2 pence. Of the amount
raised, 290 pounds was for the support of Rev. Eleazer Wheelock, who was their
pastor for 35 years, and afterward first president of Dartmouth College.
In 1744 Mr. Newcomb was on a committee to see that a school be kept in the
parish the ensuing year.
Tradition says that John Newcomb, at the age of 72 years, made a trip to
Nova Scotia in order to investigate conditions. He was so favorably impressed
with the country that he returned to Connecticut and immediately began
preparations for removing his family to Nova Scotia. Deacon John Newcomb was
evidently the recognized head of the family, for it is certain that three
generations of Newcombs were among the pioneer settlers. Old Deacon Newcomb
worked valiantly with others in bringing the settlement into a condition of
order. He was prominent in religious and secular affairs, but his greatest
interest was in the establishment of a church. In the summer of 1760 he
brought his wife and their children, Eddy, Abigail, and John, and perhaps also
Jonathan and their families, to the lands vacated by the deportation of the
French Acadians, 1755-56. The three sons were among the grantees of the
township of cornwallis, 1761. In 1762 Deacon Newcomb assisted in the
organization of the First Presbyterian church, to which many of his
descendants have since belonged. The homestead upon which both Deacon Newcomb
and his wife died has for generations remained in the possession of their
descendants, three consecutive generations bearing the name of John. A
correspondent writes: "His descendants were persons of strict uprightness,
stern integrity and unflinching perseverance, many having remarkable
developments of natural talent and native energy." The town records of
Cornwallis contain the following notice of the deaths of Mr. Newcomb and his
wife: "Deacon John Newcomb Departed this Life the 22nd day of February Anno
Domini 1765." "Ellis (Alice) Newcomb widow of said Deacon John Newcomb
Departed this Life January the 8th Day A.D. 1767 Aged about 77 1/2 years."

345. ALICE LOMBARD was born 19 Oct 1686 in Edgartown, Dukes, MA, USA. She died 8 Jan 1767 in Cornwallis, Kings, Nova Scotia. [Parents]
