One of the most influential rock bands of the last 20 years, the New York
Dolls predated the glam rock/punk movements that followed in lipstick and
eyeliner. Formed in 1972, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Arthur Harold
Kane, Sylvain Sylvain, and Jerry Nolan made up the band. The
band produced a tacky glam-rock image with lipstick, high heels, and tacky
leather outfits, truly a one of a kind. Underneath they were a first-rate
rock and roll band, influenced by the music of the Stooges, Rolling Stones,
and MC5. Their self-titled debut, r4released in 1973, was a major
landmark in rock history. It screamed attitude and controversy with
every note. It met with widespread critical acclaim, but never transferred
to commercial success. The follow up, Too Much Too Soon, was an appropriate
title and indicated that drugs and alcohol were taking its toll on the
band. The album remains a collection of punk/glam rock songs, but
was given a thumbs down from the music press, and because of this the band
began to implode shortly afterwards. Johnasen began a solo
career while Thunders and Dolan formed the Heartbreakers. The Dolls
continued for a short time before eventually grinding to a halt in 1975,
despite the support of new manager Malcolm McLaren. The link to the
Sex Pistols and the UK punk movement allowed the Dolls too remain a constant
reference point for teen rebels all over the world.
