Sure, we all know Mario. Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser. Mario goes on a quest. Mario challenges Bowser. Mario beats Bowser. Mario saves Peach. Peach thanks him for it. But there maybe something that we don't know about that is a mystery and a secret to us...
Mushrooms could cause illusions, which means that it's possibly a drug. Mario takes mushrooms to get bigger, with the Poisoness mushrooms from the Lost Levels which make him smaller or kills him. That fits the bill perfectly. Check out other drug references in the game, none defined as of now.
