Julieta
is a ten yeard whose closest friends are two boys named Pedro and Cristobal,
the heirs of the prosperous hacienda "El Castillo". Genaro Valencia, the
boys' father, is against their friendship because he considers Julieta
to be beneath them. Near "El Castillo" lives a painter named Gabriel Almada.
A series of circumstances will force him to become the guardian of little
Julieta. Shortly after, he leaves town with his ward. The years go by and
we find that Julieta is now a brilliant physician. Driven by her loneliness,
Julieta decides to set up her practice in her hometown. Gabriel, wanting
to be near her and protect her, decides to follow her. Once they have settled,
the past comes back to haunt them. Genaro's hatred toward Gabriel is rekindled,
for he has always known that the painter was his wife Sofia's true love.
His son Pedro shares his hatred because he once saw Gabriel kissing his
mother. Now, he is doubly hurt when he realizes that his childhood friend
is under the influence of this man, whom he considers despicable. Genaro
brings his niece Nadia to "El Castillo" to live with them. He expects to
solve his financial problems with the fortune that Nadia has recently inherited.
Meanwhile, Julieta discovers that her innocent childhood friendship with
Pedro has turned into a deep and true love which Pedro also feels, but
are separated by Nadia who wants Pedro for herself. Alone and heartbroken,
Julieta takes refuge in Gabriel who, by now, has realized that his paternal
love has grown into an obsession for the young woman. Julieta is torn between
two conflicting emotions: her burning passion for Pedro, and the peaceful,
secure love that Gabriel offers her. Now, Julieta must choose between these
two loves, which have haunted her throughout her life.
