Here
is a summary of the grading system for Grade 8: EARTH
SCIENCE
TESTS + ASSIGNMENTS + PARTICIPATION + BEHAVIOR = MASTERY
1) Breaking Points for Grading System
(Percentage
grade listed is the minimum percent required for that grade)
A+ =
98.5% B+ = 88.5% C+ = 78.5% D+ = 68.5% F = >59.5
A = 92.5 B = 82.5 C
= 72.5 D = 62.5 F- = >50.0
A- =
89.5 B- = 79.5 C- = 69.5 D- = 59.5 E = Not Used
(The
0.5% added to each break point is to compensate for rounding)
2) Grading is on a percentage of total points.
All
assignments and tests are worth a certain number of total points. Homework is due on test day!
Quizzes
and tests will account for 50% of your total grade;
and
homework, laboratory work, and behavior will account for the other 50%.
Students must earn at least a 59.5% average in this class to pass.
Part
of the student's grade will be determined by class participation, lab work, and
especially behavior. These
factors will be considered at the end of each quarter to determine whether a
person's grade will be "bumped up" one grade, especially in cases
where students may be on the border.
Adjustments for truancy, suspension, or other unexcused absences will be
calculated according to school policy.
Extra
Credit may be permitted,
but
must be cleared by the teacher! Extra
Credit may be limited.
Cheating is NOT
allowed - the student will earn a zero (0)!!!
3) Semester Grade is determined by the equation:
Qtr. 1
(50%) + Qtr. 2 (50%) = Semester Grade (100%)
4) Additional Grading Information:
A) Work that is missed by an excused
absence and is not able to be made up (ie - field trips, lab activities,
etc.) will not be factored into a student's grade. This will show up as an 'X' on their
computer report. All student absences are consider UNEXCUSED until
student returns to class with a proper 'excuse' slip from the office. The standard 2% is taken from the quarter
average for each day of unexcused absence.
B) After every graded
assignment and/or test is given, a detailed grade report is posted on the board
with an "up to the minute" quarter grade listed. NOTE: If their grade average has
fallen below a 'D' (65%) in the class, every effort is made to send a detailed
printout to their parent/guardian. This
is so that they too, can HELP their child progress in a positive
direction!
