The Rise and Fall of the USSR
The most nerve-racking time for a country is when the country is vulnerable to a Communist or a dictator takeover. One of the countries that was a victim of Communism is Russia. During the Communist rule, Russians were band of their civil rights as well as many other rights. Russia acted like a prison for Russians because no one could get out and no one could get in.
From the late 1800’s to the beginning of the 1900’s Russia had been struggling under Czarist rule. During the 1800’s Europe had been changing radically in terms of the Social Structure and the Technological advances. The only country that was missing out on these advances was Russia. During the start of the twentieth century radical groups led by Social Revolutionaries and Social Democrats started to plot for the Revolution. Czar Nicholas 2nd helped the Revolutionaries by making mistakes that made the Russian people skeptical of his rule. Some of the important mistakes made were the Russo-Japan war, Bloody Sunday, and the Czar’s trust in Rasputin. After the demise of the Czar, the Provisional government also failed because of its mistakes. Russia was in chaos; the Bolsheviks led by Lenin saw a great opportunity for a takeover. After gaining the support of the Russian army, the Bolsheviks took control of the government and introduced the Socialist Order. By the End of 1907 the Bolsheviks had won a majority of the Russian Assembly. Then in 1922 Lenin gave Russia a new names; the USSR, and was ruled under a policy of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat by the Communists. The Communists in Russia was able to takeover because Russia was running out of options, Russians had to make a quick decision, because the Bolsheviks appealed to the Russians they were able to seize power.
From 1922-1991 Life in Russia was similar if not worse than life under the Czar. After Stalin came to power Russia became a Totalitarian State; Russians were horrified at the things Stalin was able to do to them. Stalin’s KGB could make and did make anyone disappear. Spies were everywhere, anyone who was heard discussing the bad of Stalin or his policies would likely be shot or sent to labor camps. Stalin also killed millions of people because of his policies. One example is when Stalin started Collective Farms. When the Peasants rebelled for the land they worked hard to get, he openly killed millions because of their opinions. During the time Communists were in power Russia was like a Prison for many Russians, because almost nobody could get out and nobody could get in.
Communism has done nothing but bad for Russia. Because of Communism millions of Russians were killed and jailed. Communism has also caused disarray in terms of Economy, Social Structure, Medical Care, and pollution. Communism is suppose to give Equality for all, but in Russia and many other communist countries is giving special privileges for some and poverty for the general population. If Communism was carried out the way it should have been, it might have been a good way of governing. Because A single group and/or person is in charge that is impossible, that is why Communism failed.
Without Mikhail Gorbachev Russia’s Revolution might have never happened, that is why he is one of the most important factors in the revolution. For many years Russians had been waiting for reform and freedom, day by day Russians grew angrier because of the response from the government. When Mikhail Gorbachev took office he faced an impatient Russia that demanded change. Gorbachev saw what his people were going through and knew change was the inevitable. Gorbachev launched a series of reforms that was to change Russia forever. He started with Glasnost, which allows the freedom of Speech, and then he set out to fix the broken Economy with a policy called Perestroika. The final piece of the puzzle is the Demokratizatsiya or democratization, which set the way for a Democracy in Russia. When Hungry and Poland overthrew their Communist government Gorbachev stuck to his word and allowed the people to rebel. After the collapse of Hungry and Poland, Czechoslovakia and Romania also fell. The Next country to fall is Russia. On September 6, 1991 the Government granted Russia its independence. Although Russia isn’t as rich and Popular as the Western Countries, Russian people have all of the rights Westerners have.
