The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Meteorological Society chose two winners for the best weather-related projects at the 58th Annual Los Angles County Science Fair. This year both winners were from the junior (middle school) division. Both were chosen for their creativity and scientific discovery.

Both winners of the 2008 LA County Science Fair received subscriptions to Weatherwise and invitations to the LA Chapter banquet.

Here are two pictures of the 2008 Los Angeles County Science Fair winners below:

Bryce Luna, an 8th grade student at Blair Magnet, Pasadena Unified school district, won with his project, “How Weather Conditions Effect the Generation of Static Electricity.” Bryce tested how temperature and humidity levels affected the strength of electrical attraction between a charged comb and a flow of water droplets. The amount of bend in the water flow was used as a measure of static electricity.

In second place, Jervon Aldridge, a 6th grader from View Park Prep, Los Angeles Unified school district, built a home-made psychrometer and recorded wet-bulb and dry bulb temperatures under different atmospheric conditions. Jervon also tested the effects of using warm or cold water on the wet bulb in his project, “Make Way for Psychrometers.”
