Near surface air temperatures vary greatly across a particular city as a function of morphology and surface cover and with time of day and season. Densely built-up areas can be slightly cooler than less developed ones during daytime hours but after sunset are found to be 3-5 oC warmer (often referred to as the urban heat island effect). Measurement, analysis and modeling of temperature data at fine grain are needed to quantify this effect and investigate the underlying physical processes in Singapore and other tropical areas and to explore urban design measures that can mitigate the heat island effect as cities continue to grow. This project will make use of existing sensors, assess the need for additional sensor networks, deploy sensors as needed, and analyze the data with a variety of statistical tools and airflow and thermal modeling programs.

We seek someone who will play a central role in the ACTUAL project by developing instrumentation platforms in London (Doppler lidar, eddy covariance systems, etc), analysing data and liaising with project partners. This involves designing experimental deployment, performing measurements, maintaining instrumentation, quality checking data and maintaining the database. Secondly, the PDRA will undertake data analysis to develop understanding of London’s urban climate, in particular the response of the urban boundary layer to the underlying heterogeneous surface, and the relationship between street scale and city scale climate. Within the project simple models of urban climate processes will be developed with application to engineering areas such as wind engineering, renewable energy generation, etc. In particular, the PDRA should develop appropriate ways to disseminate results to non-specialist project partners (Greater London Authority, Arup, The Met Office) and engage with them during the project.
Candidates will have relevant experience in scientific instrumentation, preferably including fieldwork; a PhD in a physical science, engineering or similar field; and strong communication skills, both written and verbal; and preferably should be able to drive. The Laboratory for Atmospheric Research at Washington State University (lar.wsu.edu) is seeking motivated undergraduate students interested in atmospheric science to participate in a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program supported by the National Science Foundation. The program will run from May 28 to July 31, 2009, on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, WA.
Our program will provide an intensive hands-on summer research experience for undergraduate students at all levels with an interest in atmospheric science and air quality engineering using advanced instrumentation and modeling tools. In particular, students will have access to a new mobile laboratory facility, the Mobile Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory (MACL). This facility consists of a custom built mobile trailer instrumented with gas, particle, and meteorological instrumentation to study atmospheric and aerosol chemistry. Faculty and other mentors will provide one-on-one research training, and a series of workshops will be offered to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts of atmospheric chemistry and its most common research tools.
Participants will receive a stipend plus all housing and travel costs.
Pullman WA is located in the rolling hills of the Palouse, on the eastern edge of the state. It is located 1.5 hours south of Spokane, WA, and 2.5 hours from a Department of Energy government research Laboratory (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory). Pullman is also conveniently located near outdoor activity opportunities such as hiking, biking, fly fishing, and kayaking. Popular destinations including Hells Canyon (ID), the Blue Mountains (OR), and the Columbia River (WA/OR).
A goal of this program is to select a student group that reflects diversity in terms of ethnicity and gender, and includes students that would not otherwise have exposure to research. Freshman and sophomore undergraduates are especially encouraged to apply.

A variety of methods will be deployed during the research, including micrometeorological techniques (e.g. eddy covariance, large aperture scintillometry) to determine local scale fluxes, and analysis of ground-based, airborne and satellite hyper-spectral optical and thermal IR data to determine the surface energy balance. Numerical modelling will involve urban land surface schemes and their application in WRF.
The post holder will work with Professors Sue Grimmond ([email protected]) and Martin Wooster ([email protected]) and their existing research teams to deliver cutting-edge research into urban surface energy, water and carbon exchanges.
Urban Meteorology: The EMM Group’s research on urban meteorology has centred around its investigation of energy, water and carbon exchanges using micrometeorological techniques, numerical modelling and remote sensing methods in a variety of urban areas (North America, Africa, Europe).

Thanks to a generous donation from Guy Carpenter, a reinsurance broker company, and matching funds from the University and the Hong Kong government, City University of Hong Kong has recently set up the Guy Carpenter Asia-Pacific Climate Impact Centre. The Centre is now recruiting four to six post-doctoral research fellows to perform research in the following areas:

Duties: The suitable candidate will develop and apply ecological models on the ecosystem or landscape level. This can be in the relations between abiotic and biotic factors and/or between different trophic levels. The candidate will also be expected to develop and apply broad holistic approaches for the analysis of scenarios. Duties: The successful candidate will undertake research to promote wise-use and prudent natural resources governance. This will be achieved by enhancing the understanding of policy, legal, and institutional (formal and informal) frameworks that underpin natural resource allocation, use and management within the national and local context. Broad research areas include Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM), indigenous knowledge systems (IKS), and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Particular issues to be researched include the use of traditional knowledge and popular participation in policy processes; institutional capacity and effectiveness in natural resource management; community empowerment for natural resources management; the role of donor communities in natural resources management. Duties: The successful candidate will undertake research on the dynamics of rural poverty and sustainable rural livelihoods in the Okavango Delta Ramsar Site and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region. Research questions may be derived, inter alia, from the following themes: livelihood resources and strategies, role of local institutions and organisations in poverty alleviation and food security, resource use conflicts, environmental sustainability, rural development policy, and trends in population, migration and economic policy. The work will emphasise the sustainable livelihood framework as a tool of analysis of the causes of rural poverty and intervention strategies. The candidate will also be expected to provide academic leadership to the Livelihood Unit and develop funding for rural development centred research in collaboration with other Units of HOORC. Duties: The successful candidate will i) provide academic leadership conducting and managing research on Tourism in general but focussing on the Okavango and Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region; ii) lead the development of research proposals for international funding; iii) establish a tourism research group at HOORC and foster national and collaborative links. The ideal candidate will conduct and lead research on Tourism to evaluate the potential of tourism for local economic development and conservation. This will provide information and in-depth analyses on how to: i) increase revenues for conservation; ii) minimise negative environmental and social impacts of nature, wildlife and heritage tourism; iii) produce interpretative materials for conservation education; iv) integrate the planning and management of tourism and bio-diversity conservation and v) develop sustainable tourism hospitality. The candidate will provide academic leadership to the Tourism Unit and develop funding for tourism development research in collaboration with other Units of HOORC. Requirements: A PhD qualification in Tourism Management with ten years experience, three years of which must have been at Senior Research Fellow position. A Doctoral degree in an appropriate basic or applied social science discipline such as tourism, conservation, human geography, anthropology is needed. Proven record of research excellence in cross-cutting tourism topics (tourism economics, tourism product conservation, tourism marketing, etc) is very crucial for this position. Past record should indicate successful experience in proposal writing leading to the acquisition of significant research projects. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research that provides up to date information on the economic contribution of tourism to Botswana�s revenue. He/she is also expected to undertake research in the economic evaluation of tourism destinations and products, hotel management structures and quality control, and consider overall sustainability & environment issues. The research should provide for a better understanding of the rapidly growing tourism market in Botswana and outcomes need to be made available to academic researchers, policy makers, private investors and the broader community. He/she will also be expected to work in collaboration with Centre scientists working in fields such as ecology, environmental chemistry, geochemistry and Quaternary geology in addition to developing their own research in line with the Centre�s research themes.
Specific tasks include: � Responsibility for the daily running and maintenance of the ICP-OES and GC/MS in support of HOORC�s research activities � Developing the use of the facility, solving problems (research and practical laboratory), as well as ensuring analytical consistency and accuracy. � Development of proposals and writing scientific papers resulting from the ICP-OES and GC/MS work � To conduct and publish the results of chemical/geochemical research in the Okavango Delta Ramsar site and the rest of Botswana. � Give scientific input on related Centre research issues; � Prepare regular work plans and reports � Have regular contact and consultation with the Unit Head
Requirements: At least an MSc for a Scientist or a PhD for a Senior Scientist in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry, Geochemistry or a related field. The scientist / senior scientist should have at least 5 years working experience on the ICP-OES and/or GC/MS, including experience of running a laboratory and developing/refining analytical techniques. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about applying ICP-OES techniques to addressing research problems.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in instrumentation and the application of instrumentation to a wide range of problems in the Earth and associated sciences. Previous publications, teaching and supervisory experience will be an added advantage.

The University of Botswana wishes to recruit a Research Fellow in Spatial Policy of Natural Resource Governance to be based at the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre (HOORC) in Maun.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research that promotes wise natural resource governance with emphasis on the spatial/geographical dimensions of policy, legal, and institutional (formal and informal) frameworks that underpin natural resource allocation, use and management for example in national or regional wildlife or water resources management.
In a context of evolving natural resource uses that have varied impacts on human settlement, ecosystems and on traditional patterns of resource management, the Research Fellow will be based in the Resource Governance Unit of HOORC and conduct research into the following issues as they relate to resource governance: population dynamics (including migration and economic refugees), human settlement (including service delivery and pollution), government planning and household livelihood strategies. In addition he/she will be expected to contribute to cross-cutting themes as defined in the HOORC strategic plan (see: www.orc.ub.bw).

11. Vacancy No. HOORC 11 Research Assistant: Remote Sensing
Applications are invited for the above position at the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre (HOORC) in Maun. The successful candidate will work for a number of projects based at the Centre.
Duties: The suitable candidate will be expected to: i) apply remote sensing techniques including classification analysis, the development of vegetation indeces and land use land cover change and related methods to imagery in the vicinity of the Okavango Delta and elsewhere. ii) work with the GIS technician in the development of interactive processes involving GIS and remote sensing iii) assist in the development of land-use land cover change methods for graduate students iv) assist HOORC staff in issues pertaining to remote sensing v) Be cognizant with web based image searching and selection techniques. vi) undertake selective fieldwork for ground truthing as required. The candidate will be expected to give occasional lectures on the use of remote sensing techniques to students and Government of Botswana professionals from the region and to assist HOORC staff in proposal writing.
Requirements: At least a Masters degree in remote sensing as applied to vegetation analysis in the Okavango system. Demonstrable experience in the use of ERDAS (or equivalent image processing software) is essential. Some experience in teaching remote sensing preferred. Some computer programming experience is an added advantage.

MIT/NUS research positions for work on the interaction of the built and natural environment in Singapore
This research project focuses on characteristics of the natural environment that are important to buildings, including access to shortwave radiation for daylighting and photovoltaic and solar-thermal systems and urban canyon airflows that strongly influence heat transfer. Influence of buildings on the urban environment, notably diurnal temperature changes (urban heat island effect) and outdoor thermal comfort, will also be studied. The project has three immediate openings:
1. Postdoctoral scientist or engineer. Measurement, analysis, modeling and computational simulation of daylight in tropical hot and humid climates. Measurements and analysis of luminance/irradiance over the visible and IR/UV range will utilize High-Dynamic Range (HDR) digital photography and research-class sun tracker, pyrheliometer, sky radiometer, net/UV radiometer, albedometer and other solar meter instruments. The objective is to develop high-quality models of daylight for urban studies and integration of PV into the built environment and to correlate luminance/irradiance distribution to water vapor and emissions from the built environment. Further objectives are to develop mechanisms and software for mobile measurement with wireless and real-time analysis and computational modeling.
2. Postdoctoral scientist. Outdoor temperature (surface and air), radiation and wind measurements to establish high-resolution spatial and temporal (diurnal, seasonal) variations in a tropical city. The objective is to quantify the influence of typical urban residential forms in Singapore on the local thermal environment (urban heat island) and human comfort. The data will be used to adapt and evaluate urban climate models to predict local temperatures and thermal comfort as a function of the built environment. Strong background in and experience with instrumentation and experimental protocols used in urban climate research plus urban climate modeling expertise is needed to apply for this position.
3. Postdoctoral scientist or engineer. Modeling of urban heat island effects, accounting for conduction, convective and radiative heat fluxes from buildings, urban airflows, and evapotranspiration from plants. Modeling of outdoor thermal comfort. This position requires a PhD in mechanical or civil engineering, atmospheric, oceanic or hydrologic sciences, mathematics, physics or related fields. Applicants should have strong skills in mathematics and computation, preferably with demonstrable expertise in analytic and computational airflow and heat transfer models.
Applicants must have excellent technical, organizational, and communication skills.
