FAMILY TREE

 

The Family of Zouch (Such) descended from Geoffrey, second son of Alan, Viscount of Rohan in little Brittany, France, by Constance, his wife. Daughter of Conan le Groffe, Earl Of Brittany and Maud, his wife, natural daughter of Henry I of England.

Geoffrey was Viscount of Parrhoet in Brittany, he died in 1141. His elder brother was Count of Brittany ( for a few years) but with a disputed title.

ALAN DE PARRHOET ( or la Zouche) established himself in England under Henry II (1154 -1189 ) and married Adeliza or Alice de Belmeis. Her inheritance included Tong Castle, Salop, Ashby,( after wards Ashby de la Zouche), Leicestershire, North Molton, Devon and other estates at Swavesay, Cambridgeshire, and elsewhere. Their sons William and Roger succeeded to these estates in turn.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE confirmed to the monks at Swavesay, the grants made by his ancestors to the Abbey St Segius and Bacchus in Anjou, to which the Priory at Swavesay was a cell. William died in 1199, the first year in the reign of King John. He left an only daughter Joice and was succeeded by his brother Roger. Roger la Zouche, who for his fidelity to King John had a grant from that Monarch, of the Manor's of Petersfield and Maple Durham, in the County of Southampton, part of the lands of Geoffrey de Mandeville, one of the rebellious Barons then in arms.

In the first year of the reign of Henry III (1216) he recieved grants of the forfeited estates of his kinsmen, The Viscounts of Rohan and became Sheriff of Devonshire. He died before November 3 1238.

JOICE LA ZOUCHE only daughter of William, married Robert Mortimer of Richards Castle and had two sons. HUGH MORTIMER summoned to Parliament as Lord Mortimer of Richards Castle

and

WILLIAM MORTIMER, who assumed the surname of Zouche and was summoned to Parliament as Lord Zouche of Mortimer.

SIR ALAN LA ZOUCHE in the 26th year of the reign of Henry III (1242) had a military summons to attend the King in France, and in ten years afterwards had the whole County of Chester and all North Wales placed under his Government. In the 45th year of the reign of Henry III (1261) he obtained a charter for a weekly market at Ashby de la Zouche and for two fairs in the year at Swavesay, Cambridgshire. About the same time he was constituted Warden of all the Kings forests, South of the Trent, as also Sherrif of Northamptonshire. In 1262, he was made Justice itineran for the Counties of Southampton, Buckingham and Northampton. And upon the arbitration made by Louie, King Of France, between Henry III and The Barons, he was one of the sureties on behalf of the King. Three years afterwards, he was consituted Constable of The Tower Of London and Governor of Castle at Northampton. Sir Alan was violently assaulted in Westminster Hall on June 19 1269, by John, Earl of Warren and Surrey, upon the occasion of a dispute between them regarding some landed property and with his son Roger, who happened to be with him, was severly wounded, he died on August 10 1269, leaving Roger who succeeded him, and Eudes, his second son, from whom the Zouche's and the Baron Zouche's of Harryingworth (extant derive).

ALAN, BARON ZOUCHE, this feudal Lord having distingushed himself in the wars of Gascony and Scotland in the time of Edward I, was summoned to Parliament by that Monarch as a Baron Jane 26 1297, and he had regular summonses from that period until the 7th year of the reign of Edward II ( November 26 1313). In the 5th year of the reign of Edward II his Lordship was constituted Governor of Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire and Steward of Rockingham Forest. He died in 1314 leaving three daughters, Ellen, Maud and Elizabeth. In the 8th year of the reign of Edward II (1314) a partition was made between these three daughters and co- heirs of Alan, of their father's lands, which the deceased Lord had given to his kinsman William de Mortimer who there upon assumed the name of Zouche. At his decease , The Baronly Of Ashby fell into abeyance between his daughters as it still continues with their representatives.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE, 1st Baron Zouche, Lord Of Harryingworth succeeded his mother in 1289/9 and was summoned to Parliament as a Baron from August 16 1308 to February 14 1347/8. He died on March 12 1351/2 leaving a son.

EUDES LA ZOUCHE, son of William possessed the Manor of Calston, Wiltshire and Manor's in Bedfordshire, Warwickshire, Lecistershire and Rutland. He died during the lifetime of his father leaving a son.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE, 2nd Baron Zouche, heir to his grandfather, was summoned to Parliament in the lifetime of his grandfather as 'Willilmola Zousche de Haryngworth Junior from November 20 1348 to November 15 1351, and after his grandfathers death, by the same designation without the addition of Junior, from July 20 1352 to March 24 1380/1.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE, 3rd Baron Zouche summoned to Parliament from January 7 1382/3 to November 20 1394. He died May 13 1396, leaving three sons William, Edmund and Thomas.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE, 4th Baron Zouche was summoned to Parliament from November 30 1396 to September 26 1414. He was in the wars with France in the 20th year of the reign of Richard II (1397), and in the third year of the reign of Henry IV (1402), he attended Blanche, the Kings daughter on her marriage to Louis, Duke of Bavaria. He was made a KNight Of The Garter in 1415.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE 5th Baron Zouche was summoned to Parliament from January 7 1425/6 to February 28 1462/3. William suceeded him. John his younger son, married elizabeth daughter of Richard, 4th Lord Grey of Codnor and Aunt and co-heir of Henry 7th and last Lord Grey and was ancestor of Zouche of Codnor.

WILLIAM LA ZOUCHE, 6th Baron Zouche and apparently Lord St Maur ( from his mother) was summoned to Parliament February 28 1466/7 and had four children. John, William, Elizabeth and Margaret.

JOHN LA ZOUCHE 7th Baron Zouche was summoned to Parliament from January 22 1482/3 to December 9 1483. He was attainted 1485 but this attainter was reversed 1495 and he was summoned again from October 17 1509 to November 12 1515.

JOHN LA ZOUCHE 8th Baron Zouche was summoned to Parliament from November 5 1548. First married Dorothy, daughter of Sir William Capell, Lord Mayor od London by whom he had two sons, Richard and John. ( Will proved April 21 1551)

RICHARD LA ZOUCHE 9th Baron Zouche, summoned to Parliament on January 23 1551/2. He married twice and died 1552, leaving one son by his first wife. ( Will proved August 5 1552).

GEORGE LA ZOUCHE, 10 Baron Zouche, Summoned to Parliament from January 5 1552/3 to September 30 1566

EDWARD LA ZOUCHE, 11th Baron Zouche summoned to parliament from April 2 1571 to may 17 1625. Temporary Governor of Guernsey, C.I. 1600 Lietenant of North and South Wales 1602. Constable of Dover Castle and Warden of The Cinque Ports 1615 to 1625. When Lord Zouche died in 1625 the Baronies of Zouche Of Haryngworth and St Maur fell into abeyance between his co- heirs and so continued until 1815. (His will was proved Sept 20 1625).
