Not sure of the reason behind Leonardo changing his name from CONTESSA to CONTES, but first document which shows the change of my Great Grandfather's names is the following:

DECLARATION OF INTENTION
Dept. of Commerce and Labor-Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization

North Dakota, County of Morton, in the district Court of Morton County
"I
Leo CONTES, age 22 years, occupation: Laborer, do declare on oath affirm that my personal description is: Color White, complexion Dark, height 5 feet 6 inches, weight 150 pounds, color of hair Black, color of eyes Brown, other visible distinctive marks None; I was born in S. Marco In Lamis, Italy, on  the 7th day of January, anno Domini, 1892, I now reside at Mandan, N. Dak
I emigrated to the United States of American from
Naples Italy on the vessell Romanic; my last foreign residence was S. Marco In Lamis, Italy.  It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, and particulary to Victor Emanuel (?) III King of Italy, of which I am now a citizen subject; I arrived at the port of New York on or about the 5th day of March, anno Domini, 1907; I am not an anarchist; I am not a polgamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy; and it is my intention in good faith to become a citizen of the Untited States of America, and to permanently reside therein: SO HELP ME GOD.

Leo CONTES (original signature of declarant.)
Subscribed and sworn to before me this
5th day of August, anno Domini 1914, Ed ?????, Clerk of the District Court

Also filing on the same day, in Morton County, District Court, a resident of Mandan, was Leo RENDINA, age 23, born San Marco in Lamis, emmigrated from Port of Naples to New York, 13 March, 1910, vessell Europa.  Leo is believed to be my Great-Grandfather's cousin, a son of one of his mother's brother(s).
Five days later on 10th August, 1914, ,filing the Declaration of Intention in the same court, a resident of Mandan, was Luigi CIAVARELLA, aged 21, born San Marco in Lamis, emmigrated from port of Naples to New York on the vessell Louisiana on 01 May, 1910.  Luigi is likely a relation to Nicola(e) CIAVARELLA who married Antoniella CONTESSA.  Ironically Luigi's son Ken (recently deceased) and daughter (living) knew my father Larry while he lived in Bismarck, ND.  My father met Ken at the Job Corps. where Ken  taught.  They formed a band together and performed at functions, at the Elks Club, etc.  Luigi was good friends with my Grandfather Benny.
