sziasztok!

another week, another email... this go around?
*cd party =)
*my weekend: pécs!
*and so forth and so on

first off, what on earth is a cd party? the idea for this came when shalom was checking out all my cds (about half of which i have in a 96-cd book here), and she mentioned several she has which i've been wanting to hear -- this was a couple weeks ago though! so this past thursday, we invited other folks to join us and had a big cd and book trade-o-rama with 6 flavors of ice cream and fun hot drinks to share besides -- party in a box =) now everybody has new music and books to enjoy for a bit instead of just what they came with, and i taught even more people how to play euchre =) (one of my current missions in life =P ) plus, this gave me a chance to sample cds to create an excellent tried and true christmas cd wish list =) haha -- but yeah, major yay for fun times with excellent people =)

this saturday, shalom, amanda, arlene, eric, matt, and i went to visit pécs, a city in southern hungary about 20 miles from the croatian border -- party in a box =) we only had the day there so we had to move quickly, but we saw quite a bit for the time we had -- first we checked out an old turkish mosque converted into a catholic church... it's the biggest building left standing in hungary from the turkish occupation back in the day and it's an interesting mix of mosque and church type architecture/art/etc... spiffyness... after that, one of the things pécs is famous for is their tv tower -- it's high up on a hill up a majorly winding road and then it stands 187 meters high above everything -- you can go about half way up via elevator for a spectacular view as well as lunch -- i even got amanda to skip the whole way around the viewing deck with me =) awesome sight! (of town from the tower, not of us skipping) =P... after that, we made it back down and explored town. vaserely, the artist who founded the concept of "op"-art, was a native of pécs, and we saw a whole gallery of his stuff in the house he was born in -- after that we visited the hungarian modern & rennaissance art museums across the street. by then it was already 4pm and everything was closing so we wandered for a bit and found their famous gate -- on one street in town, there are two gates... when couples are married in pécs they have their names engraved on a lock and lock it to the gate, however some people have made fun with this tradition too -- not only are there really nice locks hooked everywhere, but also some really cheap ones with names written in whiteout, etc. -- still that many of them all together totally covering the gate is a pretty spiffy thing to look through for a bit... finally ate dinner at elefant, a pizzeria our language teacher says is her favorite ever -- three cheers for mushroom and artichoke pizza, *and* for friends who will eat it with you. =) after that our day was basically done as we spent our last bit of time *finding* the train station again for our ride home -- yay for fun times, *and* for finally visiting non-capital city hungary =)

finally, sunday, we had a big movie/dinner night for our bible study group i've been going to here -- it was a party in a box kind of time -- and another excuse to make mom's cucumber salad recipe, which is becoming quite well traveled =P... besides that, very happy pasta with majorly big mushrooms, happy bread (hungarian bread is the best... absolutely nothing compares =) ) and just happy time in general... after dinner we watched forrest gump and are discussing it on tuesday night (valpo: sound remotely like any bible studies you know of? =P) we also had an *interesting* trip home, not entirely due to me -- but i did document the experience well in film, and can't wait to finish off this roll now =) more on that in the 'things lara has learned this week' section... =P otherwise, 4 busy days, including going to the opera again for class on wednesday, and before i know it brother arrives at 3pm here time, 8am memphis time, on friday for an excellent week and a half visit!... most definitely excited! (öcsem jön! öcsem jön!) but for now, on with the usual....

things lara has learned this week

*don't talk with headphones on (end of thought =P)

*what graduate math textbook are you? find out here: http://www.math.mcgill.ca/~dsavitt/GTM.html

*read the greatest (mathematical) story ever told: topology fans will get the biggest kick out of this, but some of you that have zero liking for math may enjoy it too... check it out here: =)

*if you take a picture of the end of the metro line late at night, people look at you funny

*the hand loops hanging from the top of the yellow metro here (the one that's the 3rd oldest subway line in the world) are good for swinging from like monkeys -- at least if you're nathanael and/or ben =P

*if you put big plastic mixing bowls on people's heads, you should let them take them off themselves =P (no further comment)

*conclusion of the last three lines plus a little: it's a dangeous thing to have 6 hyper americans with a subway car to themselves late at night =P

quotes of the week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i want photo credits from last week and public apology or i'm never talking to you or giving you pictures ever again -- and this time i mean it! ~eric (how many times have i heard this? =P all jokes aside, pictures last week come from eric, and without his sharing-ness you wouldn't be able to see what i'm up to lately at all, so cheers for him! =P)
me: you're it, no touchbacks
nathanael: answer me this: what gives you all the it-ness that you have the power to start this game all the time?
oh! i forget you all are the babies of hungary -- you know next to nothing! ~erika, hungarian language prof
...and now the ex-communists are in power -- don't tell them i call them that, but that's what they really are ~erika
i'm an engineer: i'm not even worthy to spit on your homework! ~nathanael
you know, if *i* were going to start up a delicatessen in déli train station, i would have called it the déli-catessen... i think someone missed out on a big marketing opportunity here! ~matt (random fact of the day: in hungarian, déli means southern, and déli, keleti (eastern) and nyugati (western) are the three big train stations in budapest =) )
i *wish* the gre was blue and squishy, unfortunately it wasn't ~eric
but what's a party in a box without the original party in a box? all the others are just cheap imitations! ~alliswan
me: what? i'm not funny at all, i'm the most serious person EV-er! (and for some reason, all 4 people i was talking to at the time burst out laughing hysterically -- go figure...)
aaahhhh!!!... you're officialy weird now -- you've given two wrong answers in a short period of time -- when i asked "has a pig ever slept in your house?" and the answer wasn't no, and now this.... the answer to that question should *not* be yes! ~eric
life is like a box of chocolates -- you *never* know what you're gonna get ~forrest gump =)
party in a box week to you all =)
