Fanniesson

Seventy two years old

This is the age my father fell apart,
swallowing his tongue for the after dinner show.
Needing us to come around check he was all right,
stay the night, make sure he took is medicines

This was around the time weekly visits
to his doctor began,
ambulance rides to the hospital,
oxygen tanks stood readied by his bed.
No one panicking anymore when
he convulsed couldn't breath.

Around the time he show us
how death was gonna take him
and what we had to do
to make sure,
it wasn't on our watch.

Living Together.

She's saved
I'm not.
Still we live together
with pictures of
Jesus, statues of Saints cluttering
dresser and end table tops.

Still we live together
with Bible reading friends
over a few times a week
me upstairs in by underwear
watching porn on pay for view.

Still we live together
her quoting the Bible,
praying for my soul
every chance she gets.
Me trying my damnedest
not to break the fifth commandment
dealing with her.

Still we live together
Sundays her tapping me
out of a sound sleep
to let me know.
She's going to church,
and I'm going to hell

Bones

You got to be somebody.
That's the rule the underlining gold.
Deliver the mail, look for gas leaks
fight fires, bring home the bacon,
pay those damn bills become your parents.

Nobody get through this life without scars
or eating shit!
That's the way the almighty designed it
built the maze.

No one goes straight to the top.
Even his kid
had to spend some time on a cross.

So I Ain't Going to Heaven

Stuffed Mr. Bojangles into a burlap sack
one morning.
Stopped by the creek on the way to work,
threw him in.
Sure I could've set him free,
let him run wild with the other rabbits
but I hated him!
So I ain't going to Heaven

I'm not sailing around the world
on my forty foot yacht.
Looking for underwater treasures
with the kids and grandkids
as my crew.

This part of my life is gonna be
like the rest
only a bit more painful.
As death gnaws at my organs
till I eventually welcome it
with open arms
