1).  Tierney section 86

We have already looked at John of Paris, so concentrate on Marsilius of Padua and William of Ockham.  What criticisms do they make about the organization of the church in their time?  The more important reading is Marsilius of Padua.  How does he explain authority within the church, what powers appropriately belong to the church, what belong to the secular rulers, and what does he say about most elements of Catholic practice in his time (e.g. fasts, clerical celibacy, etc.)

Note: you can skip John Wyclif.

2).  Tierney section 98.

What demands does Catherine of Siena make of the pope?  What gives her the authority to do so, and what does this tell you about the state of the church in her time?

3).  Chapter 33

What is accomplished by the Council of Constance?  By what right was this action carried out?  How did it attempt to change the governance of the church, and what other reforms did it attempt?  What effect did the decree Execrabilis have on this process?
