Final Study Questions

 

 

 

1).  Compare and contrast the reform movements offered by Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin.  How were they similar, how were they different, and why did those differences emerge?

            Useful Readings: readings from Luther; readings from Calvin (selections from The Institutes, “Ecclesiastical Ordinances,” and “Obedience to Secular Rulers.”

 

2).  How did the Catholic church respond to the Reformation?  Who would be satisfied by the Catholic church’s reforms?  Who would not be?  Why?

            Useful Readings: “Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent.”

 

3).  Compare and contrast the spread of the Reformation in France, England, and the Holy Roman Empire.  How do you account for the success (or failure) of the Reformation in each?

 

4).  What effects did the Wars of Religion have on the nations of Europe?  Be certain that you can discuss the effects of the wars on individual nations.

 

5).  How did European thought change in the period between the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution?  Why?

            Useful Readings: Petrarch, Bruni, Erasmus, and the readings in chapter 12 on the Scientific Revolution.
