1).  How did European society change between the years 1000 and (approximately) 1400?  What caused these changes, and what was their impact?

Useful readings: Galbert of Bruges, “Commendation and the Oath of Fealty,” Fulbert of Chartres, “Obligations of Lords and Vassals,” “How to Succeed in Business,” “Ordinances of the Guild Merchant of Southampton,” “The Black Death,” and “The Peasant Revolt of 1381.”

2)  Discuss the development of government in the High Middle Ages (from about 1000 to 1300).  How did kings build their power, what obstacles did they face, and how did government change in this period?

Useful readings:  Galbert of Bruges, “Commendation and the Oath of Fealty,” Fulbert of Chartres, “Obligations of Lords and Vassals,” Magna Carta, and Edward I’s “Summons to Parliament.”

3).  How did Western Christians’ relationship with those who did not share their faith change between the years 1000 and 1300?  Why did those changes occur, and what were their effects?

Useful readings: “Appeal of Urban II to the Franks,” “Heretics: Enemies of God and Humanity,” “Massacre of the Jews of Mainz,” “A Decree by Pope Innocent III,” and “The Libel of Ritual Murder.”

4)  How did thought (or education) change in the period between the collapse of Rome in the West and the High Middle Ages?  You should look at what questions scholars studied, what factors influenced thought, and what effect these changes in thought had.

Useful readings: Cassiodorus, “The Monk as Scribe,” Charlemagne, “Injunction to Monasteries to Cultivate Letters,” readings from Peter Abelard and Thomas Aquinas.
