What the heck are "paintovers"? Put simply, they are original finish models that have had hand and/or airbrushed details added to enhance them, yet retaining the beautiful features of their original finish paintjobs.
This handsome fella started out as a Breyer Bay Standing Stock Horse foal. After many unsuccessful attempts to sell him as an original finish model, I took to him with a paintbrush and transformed him into an eye-catching apploosa. The spots on his butt are the model's original finish - I carefully painted the white around the spots I plotted out. He also sports pink mottling on his nose, around his eyes and on his "underside". ;-)
This former Phar Lap benefitted greatly from his new pinto pattern, which was designed to cover several scuffs and scratches. He went from a "body" to a beauty with some white paint and patience.
This former Apricot Dun Adios (#705) is my favorite paintover. The original finish model was lovely to begin with but it just wouldn't sell! Feeling adventurous to try a wilder pattern than I normally would attempt, this Adios went from a pretty OF model into a wowser of a Paint.
This is a 1992 Sears SR grullo Clydesdale stallion who came out of the box with a rub on his left hip. Add a bit of white paint and no more rub!
This formerly unloved Roemer tried to make his way through life with a few minor rubs and scratches but the way was hard. To make his acceptance into the model horse world easier, he decided a new identity might do the trick so now he's an eye-catching pinto sporthorse.
Breyer's "Tara" is a lovely piece to begin with and since I had two of them, I decided to see what one would look like with pinto markings. I'm kinda pleased at how she turned out - from plain pony to wowza pony!
Carol Gaspar's "Summer Love" resin arrived with an irreparable hip rub in her airbrushed paint job. Addition of white paint in the shape of tobiano markings gave this little lady a new lease on her showing life.
