Rock music is fun! It's a way of self-expression, a way of communicating, and a way of having fun. Many young people turn to rock because the music frequently speaks about the insecurites of growing up. One major style of rock that does this is emo, short for emotional. There are many branches of rock. Some branches of rock branch off even further into sub-subdivisions! On this site, there is a chart of the different subgroups of modern rock. This does not include: Classic Rock [sorry, dad!], Surf Rock, Blues Rock, and some other stuff. Anyway, like I was saying... Rock is a means of self-expression. "Traditional" lyrics of most rock speaks of insecurites, dreams, perspective on different subjects, and other topics. A lot of rock listeners find truth to what the singers are saying most of the time.

Rock started in the early 50's with many surf rock bands. Surf rock was popular, with, you guessed it, surfers. These singers mostly sang about riding the waves, and being young, having fun. Rock evolved from this as the Beatles came along helping to form Pop Rock. In the 60's, many peace-loving singers wrote about loving one another and creating world peace. Rock almost died out in the 70's, but punk seemed to save it, coming up from the underground with attitude in '77. Rock seemed to come back in the 80's, mixing in with New Wave. Rock turned grunge, a style almost created by Nirvana, in the early 90's and late 80's. Rock hit a pinnacle of listeners in the mid-90's with pop-punkers like Green Day. Rock in the 90's also became more emo. Now, as we near 2004, rock has expanded to many horizons!

An Alternative Focus...

This is a focus on alternative rock, sometimes called alt rock. Alternative is a style of rock that is pretty common these days. There are whole radio stations dedicated to bringing the listener the freshest alt rock everyday. Such a radio station is Live 105, who occasionally plays music other than alt. Alt has given a new vibe to the rock and roll of old. New alt bands are emerging almost weekly out of different places around the country. Many bands have influenced alt in ways so admired, sometimes it's hard to believe what rock would be like without them. One band that has been extremely influential to all rock, not just alt, is Radiohead. Radiohead has influenced it's many sounds all over the rock scene. Most rock bands will answer Radiohead if you ask them about their influences. Alternative is closely set with Punk. Punk is probably the broadest branch of rock, branching into many subgroups. These subgroups are:
