Well I suppose the first thing I should do is assure everyone that I am alive and well. The bombing occured in a south-eastern region of Madrid during the morning peak hour, on a train line that operates through a large commercial and industrial section of the city and from what I understand the majority, if no all, the victums were Spanish Nationals. As far as I am aware there were no Australians involved.
The Spanish are taking the incident pretty hard. In the front of a number of shop windows is an A4 piece of paper with a printed black ribbon for the victums of the tragedy. It is really nice, and they ran special bells at noon. At least I think that was what the bells were for. There isn�t a feast day coming up or anything so I really can�t see why else they would ring such bells. I first heard of the incident from my Galician flatmate. His response was - The bloody Basques (not in those words of course since he speaks next to no english - but words to that effect.) The newspapers have talked about little else and the politicians look like they might be toughening their stance on ETA. The reason for the bombing, something which I know the news seems to have failed to tell people, is the national election that is taking place tomorrow. I heard from my family that some smart-a$$ has decided that the attack was Al-Qaeda related for various reasons but as far as everything goes I think the most involvment they have is in selling ETA the various elements for the bomb and nothing else. Alternately I suppose it is possible that they are reponsible and they planned it so that ETA would be blamed, but given the election is this Sunday, many people around here think that is not the case. Everyone here will be waiting for the outcome of the investigation by the National Guard.
Please do not worry about me. There are any number of really good reasons as to why the Basques or anyone else would not waste a bomb in a little university town. Including the fact that I don�t think the goverment would really care that a bunch of over-paid, underfed, over-sexed, drunk, stoned or otherwise hungover students were victums of such an attack and I don�t think that those same over-paid, underfed, over-sexed, drunk, stoned or otherwise hungover students would a) care or b) even notice that such an attack had taken place. Please to not worry. I am fine and no one I know was involved in the carnage or related to anyone who was a victum of the attack.
