Laura's Home Page ...Laura Falk quilt

Welcome to my Home Page!

Want to look at some pictures of Will? Just click on his name.

Right now, this site is primarily to showcase my quilt collection. I made the first three shown at the right, but the rest of them were made by family members or friends. To take a closer look at any of the quilts, just click on the thumbnails. (Also, please be patient--the descriptions are still under construction.)

I've been quilting for just over a year now, and have completed two small wallhanging-sized quilts ("Laura's Hoedown" & "Serendipity"). One more is almost finished ("Cavewoman"), and I have a bed-sized Lone Star under construction. (There is also a quilted pillow that took me 6 years to finish, but we won't talk about it!)

At this point, most of my quilting is machine pieced and hand quilted (just like my mom does), although I did experiment with machine quilting on the "Cavewoman" piece. I may do more machine quilting in the future, but I love the look of hand quilted items.

I grew up around quilters. My mom, my aunt who lived across the street, my maternal grandmother who lived just down the road--all quilters. So, too, were many family friends and neighbors. Despite all these positive influences, the bug didn't bite me until late in 1999. But I've been quilting ever since!

I belong to a quilt guild called Circle in the Square Quilters here in St. Louis. Most of the members do art quilts, but a few work on more traditional pieces as well.

Here's another site (not quilt-related) that I think is worth a look. If you want to see some cool wooden bowls, visit my friend Russell's website.

I'm still in the process of creating this site. Please check back often for updates, or contact me. E-mail me!

"Cavewoman"--This was an experiment based on Quilting Today's (September 2000) article on Ricky Tims and "Caveman Quilting". Unlike my other quilts, this one is completely machine pieced and machine quilted (my first attempt at machine quilting). (Finished October 2000)
"Serendipity--Quilt Class 101"-- This wall hanging came from a hand quilting class I took at the Quilted Fox. The serendipitous part relates to the quilt challenge show my guild was about to have. The challenge was to make a quilt that contained at least one circle and one square. The deadline was approaching and I didn't have anything with a circle in it--until this class and the Drunkard's Path Block came along! (Finished September 2000)
"Laura's Hoedown"--This was my first quilt ever! I took the pattern from a magazine (will insert name as soon as I find it again), and definitely learned a lot! There's probably not a single original stitch in the pieced section of the quilt, as I kept turning the blocks the wrong way when trying to set them together. You wouldn't think that a block could get turned around in the three feet between the bed and my sewing machine, but it definitely can happen! (Finished March 2000)
"Double Wedding Ring"--My mother made this quilt (machine pieced; hand quilted) for my husband and me in ~1996. It's been on our bed ever since!
"9 Patch"-- This quilt was pieced by either my maternal grandmother or my Aunt Elvie and hand quilted by my Mom. I love the bright yellows in it!
"Strawberries"-- My mom hand appliqued and hand quilted this one for me when I was about 9 because even though I didn't eat strawberries, I liked the way they looked on a quilt! I appliqued one block (extreme lower left corner).
"Fencerail?"-- This quilt (Is it a Fencerail block? Does anyone know?) was made by my maternal grandmother. It is hand pieced and machine quilted.
"Grandma's Friendship Quilt"--This quilt dates back to the 1930s and belonged to my maternal grandmother. The blocks were all made by relatives or neighborhood friends and each is unique. The top had never been quilted until 1979 when my mother decided to take it home and finish it.
"Hexagon?"--I don't know the name of this block either. My paternal grandmother (Mrs. Bess) pieced this quilt, and her daughter (my Aunt Elvie) machine quilted it. It dates back to at least the 1950s.
"Aunt Dee"-- My great-aunt Demova made this quilt for Chris and me for our wedding. She's 90+ years old, and still quilts like a fiend, despite arthritis and weakening eyesight.
"9 Patch"-- Here's another 9 patch; this one made by my maternal grandmother on the sewing machine.
I also don't know the name of this block. The quilt was pieced by my maternal grandmother, and later quilted by my mom.
"Double Wedding Ring"--Another Mrs. Bess quilt. This one was given to my father, then handed down to me.
"Dresden Plate"-- This quilt was pieced by Mrs. Bess, and handquilted by my mom. Once again, I love those yellows!
"Mrs. Brown"-- A longtime neighbor from when I was young, Mrs. Dora Brown made this quilt for me when I graduated from high school.
"Ex-boyfriend"-- An ex-boyfriend of mine (waaayy back from high school) had a mother who quilted, and she made this quilt for me for my 18th birthday.
