Margaret Cavendish was a strong minded, eccentric woman who wrote in the 17th century. I once left a pen at the feet of her effigy!
Caitlin Thomas was an excellant writer in her own right, but she is always overshadowed by her husband, Dylan. Most sites only give her a mention, and none reall talk about her writing, but here's a picture.
The very first American poet was a woman: Anne Bradstreet.
Sheridan Le Fanu was a Victorian era horror writer. Most of his stories are short by victorian standards, but still pretty long. They're worth the effort, though! He's not a woman, but he is forgotton, and it's a shame!

The Women's Writers' Project makes texts that would not usually be acessable for casual study available for purchase. If you want, you can go get a letter of intro-duction so you can get a British Museum Library card, go to London, and spend your time there waiting for Margaret Cavendish's World's Olio to be brought out to you, or have it copied onto micro-film, blah blah blah. Or you could order it here, cuz it ain't at Barnes & Nobel!

Ursula K. LeGuin - very cool sci-fi writer.
Canadian songwriter Jane Siberry is one of the few musicians whose lyrics stand on their own. The music is just an added bonus to the poetry, and she is definately worth checking out.
