From Oklahoma City to Branson

Back

Oklahoma City to Branson -- day 9

What a luxury to pass through a town hundreds of miles away from home and call a friend to stop by and have coffee. Dwight and Cathy were close friends of ours during our young married days. We played pinochle and bridge weekend after weekend -- babies sleeping on blankets on floors, potato chips with onion dip, good conversation, and lots of fun. We haven't seen Dwight for probably 20 years. It was as though it were yesterday. We had emailed him a day or two before and received his work phone in response. As we came upon Tulsa, we called him, and then we were on and off our cell phones as we he left work and we separately converged on a convenient place to meet. What a thrill! The experience only serves to remind us of the good friends we were -- and are. Such a special time.

The countryside is changing now. The further east we travel, the greener it becomes. We are coming into rolling hills covered with leafy trees, as well as wonderful farmland. As I admire the farms so close to the interstate, I must remind myself that these great roads, allowing us this great view, were probably unwelcomed by these people who had once had a private existence.

We are traveling well. Everyone has adjusted to the experience, including the cats. They are so acclimated to traveling now that they show their faces soon after we stop the RV. During the first days, they would hide during travel and for hours afterwards.
