Niagara Falls, day 25
The drive on US 15 along the Susquehanna River is beautiful
-- mostly two lanes and being improved even as we drove -- but very
driveable. We suspect the Susquehanna provides many hours and
days of pleasure for those who live or vacation there -- at least
in spring and summer. We saw a lot of farms. Although Pennsylvania is known as a coal mining state, it is lesser known for its farms.
As we drove, we ran into some heavy storms which apparently
arrived in Niagara Falls before we did.
We called ahead to reserve our camping place in Niagara Falls.
Although the weather had cleared up, the campground was half
flooded. We were lucky to find a relatively dry campsite. We met the
hosts of the campground, Art and Margaret. They told us about
campground hosting, where you stay for several months and work
about 20 hours a week for your space and utilities. A possibility
for the future.
For the second time on our trip, we were warned that we would be
subject to an inspection crossing the border into Canada, and I
was dreading having to empty the RV and repack it. My "plastic
box packing" gave me some comfort because everything is neatly
stored away, but it still didn't seem to be a pleasant experience
to look forward to.
The skies were fairly clear when we parked, and we rushed out to
the falls and began to snap pictures right and left. Goat Island
is a beautiful and well-maintained park. The tourist information
service had told us it would cost us $5 to park there, but we
arrived so late that we parked for free in a nearly empty parking
lot.
It occurs to me that we could call our trip a "Sampler" because
we are just touching the surface of the many beautiful places
we've seen. We are covering a lot of miles for six weeks. We are
fast "lookers." I'm sure we've missed 100 times the sample we've
seen. But over the years, we find that when we really want to see
something, we eventually come back and look longer and harder.
We've spent many weeks in southwest Colorado, a place we once
sampled, and we've traveled to Germany a few times just to look
and look again. There are places where you just must have time to
absorb more, and we've been lucky enough to find some of those
places and have the opportunity to go back.
Our little respite of good weather ended soon after we came back
to the RV. We had thunder and lightening and heavy rains nearly
all night, along with visions of floating away. We put our
sandals and tennis shoes away and began full-time booting!
