Harrisburg, day 24
We celebrated birthdays in Harrisburg, feasted on steak, ribs,
and shrimp. Our visit with our friends of many, many years was
like coming home.
Klaus is building a new home in the countryside in Harrisburg.
The foundation and basement are there and the framing for the
house should come soon, all on a wooded two-acres. His new home
is within a mile or so of an entry path to the Applachian Trail.
We walked about a half mile of trail just to say we'd been on it. It's
beautiful there. There are several good books on the Trail. One
of the latest is Bill Bryson's (hope I spelled his name right)
A Walk in the Woods. The book is humorous and factual. It
was on the best seller lists a few years ago. We found a copy at
a local book store, and I left it with Klaus to tempt him
Trailwards. Some day we will go back to walk a segment of the
Trail with Klaus. The AT isn't as well maintained as the Pacific
Crest Trail.
Hans had a GPS system that attracted our attention. It's a
Garmin with a large color display. We found that we could get it
by phone or internet, but not in a local store. Apparently too
new. We weren't going to be in Harrisburg long enough to order it
by mail, so Klaus and I sought it out in Harrisburg while Lauren
and Hans enjoyed visiting. We will wait until we spend a few days
in Minnesota and order it to be delivered to us there. It's
called a Street Pilot, and it not only gives you lovely maps of
where you are and where you're going, but it gives you other
interesting information, including your altitude.
One of the things we found we were missing while traveling was a
World Almanac, so we bought one at a local book store. We
use an almanac for quick fact finding at home and found ourselves
reaching for it many times during our trip. Travelers who want
to know will benefit from maps, a dictionary, an almanac, and
other references at their finger tips.
